Iberdrola España Signs Wind Power Purchase Agreement with Renfe for 3,700 GWh Until 2035 Iberdrola España, a subsidiary of Iberdrola, has signed a wind power purchase agreement with Renfe, Spain's main railway company, to promote the use of wind power in passenger and freight rail transport. The agreement is for 370 GWh of onshore wind energy per year for a period of 10 years, equivalent to the output generated by 190 MW of wind power. This partnership aims to strengthen the competitiveness of onshore wind technology within Spain's energy mix and reduce annual CO2 emissions by more than 2 million tonnes.

Partnership Details

The agreement between Iberdrola España and Renfe is a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) that will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Spain. The partnership is expected to promote the use of wind power in the most electrified mode of transport in Spain, which is rail transport.

Leader in the European PPA Market

Iberdrola has extensive experience in Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and manages agreements in several countries, including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The company has been confirmed as the leader in the European PPA market for the second consecutive year, with 1,251 MW contracted in 2024.

Global Partnerships

Iberdrola has announced agreements with major companies such as Amazon, Bayer, and Microsoft, confirming the PPA as a key tool for industrial electrification. These agreements guarantee renewable energy at a fixed and stable price over the long term. The company's global partnerships include agreements with companies such as Meta, Salzgitter, Mercedes-Benz, and Vodafone. The partnership between Iberdrola España and Renfe is a significant step towards promoting the use of renewable energy in Spain's transport sector, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the environment.
