Iberdrola España, Iberdrola's subsidiary in the country, and Mercadona have expanded their alliance with the signing of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for more than 300 MW, associated with wind and solar assets, for the supermarket chain's logistics centres and supermarkets. The announcement was made on July 30, 2025.

Partnership Expansion Details

The new power purchase agreements represent a significant expansion of the existing partnership between the two Spanish companies. The agreements cover more than 300 MW of renewable energy capacity and are structured as long-term contracts spanning the next decade. The renewable energy will be sourced from both wind and solar assets to supply Mercadona's logistics centres and supermarkets.

Both companies have been working for years to advance the electrification of their services, building on their established collaborative relationship in the renewable energy sector.

Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

As part of their ongoing partnership, Iberdrola is responsible for the supply, commissioning and operation of up to 3,500 charging points across 800 supermarkets in Spain and Portugal. The addition of these new charging points for electric vehicles represents a significant step forward in the expansion of the public charging network.

This electric mobility component demonstrates the comprehensive nature of the partnership between Iberdrola España and Mercadona, extending beyond traditional energy supply agreements to include infrastructure for electric vehicle support.

Iberdrola's PPA Experience and Global Reach

Iberdrola has extensive experience in power purchase agreements, managing PPAs across multiple international markets. The company operates power purchase agreements in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Mexico and Australia for onshore and offshore wind and photovoltaic projects.

As Europe's leading electricity company by market capitalisation and the world's second largest, Iberdrola has been offering innovative PPA proposals for more than a decade. The company's experience spans various renewable energy technologies and geographic markets.

Major Corporate Partnerships

Iberdrola has announced agreements with major companies including Amazon, with which it has signed wind and photovoltaic PPAs in Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom for the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm. The company has also signed agreements with other global customers such as Google, Bayer, BP, Telefónica and Salzgitter, as well as local customers.

These partnerships demonstrate Iberdrola's position as a significant player in the corporate renewable energy market, working with multinational corporations across various industries to meet their clean energy requirements through long-term purchase agreements.
