Hyundai Mobis Achieves Highest Certification for Semiconductor Development Process
Hyundai Mobis has obtained the highest grade of ISO 26262 certification for its entire vehicle semiconductor research and development process. The certification was awarded by Exida, a world-renowned automotive functional safety and cybersecurity certification agency based in Germany, and covers the complete process from semiconductor design to quality verification rather than specific products.
The certification includes the highest D grade in the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL), which requires strict reliability of 99% or higher to prevent safety accidents. This achievement means that semiconductors designed through Hyundai Mobis' standardized R&D process will have the same level of reliability as those certified as products.
Certification Details and Standards
ISO 26262 is an international standard for preventing safety accidents in automotive electrical and electronic systems. The ASIL system is divided into four levels from A to D, with D representing the most stringent requirements. Hyundai Mobis received the ISO 26262: 2018 2nd edition certification on August 21st. The rigorous certification was obtained for the entire R&D process rather than specific products, demonstrating the company's semiconductor design capabilities and technological stability through an authoritative external institution.
This process-level certification allows future semiconductors designed through the standardized process to achieve equivalent reliability levels.
Current Production and Future Development Plans
Hyundai Mobis is currently mass-producing 16 types of semiconductors through external foundries, with production scheduled to exceed 20 million units this year. The semiconductor portfolio includes ASIL-D-rated integrated semiconductors for airbags, power semiconductors for eco-friendly vehicles, integrated semiconductors for motor control, and power semiconductors for AVN (audio, video, and navigation) electronic components.
The company is accelerating research and development with the goal of completing 11 next-generation semiconductors within three years. These include semiconductors for battery management systems, lamps, and communication, as well as a system on a chip (SoC) for networks. Collaborations with significant domestic foundry companies support the development.
Strategic Foundation and Competitive Impact
The certification achievements are attributed to Hyundai Mobis' acquisition of Hyundai Autron in 2021, which enabled the company to begin mass production of its semiconductors this year with an industry-leading R&D environment. The company expects this certification to enhance the competitiveness of its self-designed semiconductors and controllers, as well as other components equipped with them.
As the importance of semiconductors grows, customers are increasingly preferring suppliers with standard certifications. The certification is expected to positively impact Hyundai Mobis' competitiveness in global automotive component supply contracts and lead to improved competitiveness in core components.
Lee Hee Hyun, Vice President of Hyundai Mobis' System Semiconductor R&D Group, stated: “With this certification, we have secured a strategic foundation in the automotive semiconductor sector, which will determine future mobility competitiveness. We will take the lead in establishing an R&D environment that emphasizes functional safety by strengthening partnerships with major domestic and international companies while internalizing technology.”

Partnership Ecosystem and Industry Collaboration
Hyundai Mobis plans to actively share the achievements and know-how acquired through functional safety certification with major domestic and overseas partners. The company aims to take the lead in expanding the domestic automotive semiconductor ecosystem in Korea through these collaborative efforts. The company is increasing collaboration with major domestic semiconductor companies.
This year, it established a joint lab with Global Technologies, a semiconductor design specialist, and achieved research and development results in semiconductors for next-generation smart ambient lighting. Additionally, Hyundai Mobis completed the development of an integrated drive semiconductor with Dongwoon Anatech and is moving into mass production.
Partnerships are being strengthened with leading domestic foundry companies to expand the collaboration scope, including process optimization. The company also plans to enhance cooperation with design houses that serve as intermediaries between fabless and foundry companies, semiconductor packaging companies, and specialized firms in design, analysis, and verification, as well as research institutions.
The certification represents a significant milestone in Hyundai Mobis' strategy to establish technological competitiveness in the automotive semiconductor sector while building a comprehensive domestic partnership ecosystem for K-automotive semiconductors.
