Hyundai has launched a INR 100 crore Green Hydrogen R&D Hub at IIT Madras, marking a significant development in the field of green technology. The launch of this hub is supported by the state of Tamil Nadu, indicating a collaborative effort towards advancing research and development in green hydrogen.

Project Details

Hyundai Motor India, IIT Madras, and the Tamil Nadu government have launched the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre with a cost of INR 100 crore [USD 11.9 million] green hydrogen R&D facility set to pioneer pilot-scale hydrogen systems in India. The 65,000 sq ft centre will drive electrolyser and fuel cell testing, talent development, and localization of the hydrogen value chain.

Situated at IIT Madras’s Discovery Satellite Campus in Thaiyur, Chennai, the facility marks the first phase of HMIL’s INR 100 crore [USD 11.9 million] investment toward advancing India’s hydrogen ecosystem.

Financial Investment

The initiative is partly funded through the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF) and aligns with national objectives for decarbonization, energy independence, and self-reliance.

Operation and Facilities

Inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, the facility is slated to be operational by 2026. It will feature advanced computational labs, experimental setups, digital twin systems, and pilot-scale zones for testing electrolyzers and fuel cells.

Contribution to India’s Net Zero 2070 ambition and Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.

Unsoo Kim, HMIL Managing Director, highlighted the centre's role in supporting the “Make in India” agenda and nurturing hydrogen-specific talent. IIT Madras Director Prof V. Kamakoti emphasized its contribution to India’s Net Zero 2070 ambition and Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
