Hindustan Power has received a letter of intent to develop a 120 megawatt-hour (MWh) standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bihar, marking a significant advancement in the state’s renewable energy infrastructure. The project, secured through a tariff-based competitive bidding process, will be implemented on a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis.
The BESS project will be distributed across three substations in Bhagalpur, Udakishanganj, and Sitamarhi, with each location set to host 40 MWh of storage capacity. Scheduled for commissioning within 18 months of signing the battery energy storage purchase agreement, the system is designed to enhance grid flexibility and manage peak electricity demand.
This initiative forms part of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s broader 500 MWh BESS program for Bihar, aimed at strengthening the state’s ability to balance renewable energy generation and consumption.
Supporting Renewable Energy Goals
The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission has proposed integrating distributed renewable energy into the state’s renewable power obligation targets for 2030. The move aligns with national efforts to scale up clean energy adoption and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Hindustan Power’s involvement in this BESS project reflects the company’s growing portfolio in India’s renewable energy sector. In April 2025, the company secured a 425 megawatt (MW) solar power project in Uttar Pradesh through a competitive e-reverse auction held by the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited. That project includes a 25-year power purchase agreement and a 24-month commissioning timeline.
Strategic Investment in Clean Energy
The battery storage project in Bihar highlights ongoing efforts to modernize India’s electricity grid and prepare for increased renewable energy integration. Hindustan Power’s continued investments indicate a strategic commitment to contributing to India’s long-term clean energy targets.
No official timeline has been provided yet for the signing of the storage agreement that will trigger the countdown to the project's commissioning.
