Haizea Wind Group has completed delivery of monopiles to Ørsted for the Hornsea 3 offshore wind project in the North Sea, with the components representing some of the largest offshore wind foundations ever produced in Europe.

Structures Set Manufacturing Benchmarks for the Iberian Peninsula

The monopiles delivered by Haizea Wind Group measure 11 metres in diameter, extend to more than 105 metres in length, and weigh approximately 2,300 tonnes each.

According to Haizea, these dimensions make the structures the largest ever manufactured in the Iberian Peninsula and rank them among the largest monopiles ever produced anywhere in Europe.

The scale of the components reflects the broader engineering demands of Hornsea 3, a 2.9 gigawatt offshore wind project that Ørsted is developing in the North Sea. Once fully operational, the project is expected to supply clean energy to more than 3.3 million UK homes.

Multiple Contractors Involved in Complex Logistics Operation

Moving structures of this magnitude from the manufacturing facility to the point of delivery required the coordination of several specialist contractors across different stages of the logistics chain.

Grúas Aguado collaborated in the transportation and preparation of the monopiles at the Port of Bilbao, the Spanish port that serves as the base for Haizea Wind Group's manufacturing operations.

Cadeler was responsible for the load-out and load-in operations, while Mammoet handled the overland transport of the structures using self-propelled modular transporters.

The involvement of multiple contractors across road transport, port handling, and marine load operations illustrates the logistical complexity involved in moving components of this size from the production hall to the vessel.

Haizea's Bilbao Facility Underpins Large-Scale Production Capacity

Haizea Wind Group's manufacturing site at the Port of Bilbao covers more than 200,000 square metres and comprises six production halls along with dedicated storage areas for towers and monopiles. The company said the plant currently employs more than 900 people.

The facility's scale positions Haizea as one of the significant monopile manufacturers operating in southern Europe, with the Hornsea 3 contract representing a high-profile demonstration of the plant's capability to produce foundations at the upper end of the size spectrum now being demanded by offshore wind developers.

Hornsea 3 Continues to Take Shape in the North Sea

The Hornsea 3 project, being developed by Danish energy company Ørsted, is one of the largest offshore wind developments currently under construction. At 2.9 gigawatts, it forms part of the broader Hornsea cluster of wind farms situated off the Yorkshire coast in the North Sea.

This latest delivery from Haizea is not the first consignment of monopiles the company has shipped for the project. Ørsted took delivery of the first Hornsea 3 monopiles from Haizea in February 2026, meaning the August delivery represents a continuation of an ongoing supply arrangement between the two companies under this contract.

Haizea also announced in June 2026 that it had begun work on monopiles for the Vanguard West project, indicating that the Bilbao facility is managing production across multiple offshore wind contracts simultaneously.

Growing Demand for Larger Foundations Drives Manufacturing Scale-Up

The scale of the monopiles produced for Hornsea 3 reflects an industry-wide trend toward larger turbines requiring correspondingly larger and heavier foundations.

As offshore wind developers push into deeper waters and seek to maximise energy output per turbine, the engineering specifications for monopiles have grown substantially, placing greater demands on manufacturers in terms of both production equipment and logistics capability.

Haizea's ability to produce monopiles of 11 metres in diameter and over 105 metres in length at its Bilbao facility places it at the frontier of current European manufacturing capability in this segment of the supply chain.
