H Energy said on the 13th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Peak Energy Korea to jointly develop small-scale rooftop solar projects aimed at helping companies meet RE100 commitments.

A Partnership Built on Idle Rooftops

Under the agreement, H Energy will secure developable rooftops across the country and build and operate the power plants, while Peak Energy will supply the capital.

The signing took place at H Energy's office in Seoul's Gangnam district last month, where H Energy chief executive Ham Il-han and Peak Energy Korea chief executive Park Jae-pil executed the business agreement, according to a photo released by H Energy.

Division of Roles Between the Two Companies

Under the arrangement, H Energy will identify idle rooftops nationwide and secure lease contracts. The company will then handle the full life cycle of each plant, including permits, construction, completion inspections, and operations and maintenance.

Peak Energy, for its part, will invest the project costs and set up special purpose companies to own the plants. Peak Energy is a renewable energy independent power producer wholly owned by global investment firm Stonepeak. It currently develops, owns, and operates renewable energy assets in Asia, including solar.

Why Rooftop Solar Requires a Different Approach

The partnership combines global investment capital and a development platform with idle rooftops scattered across the country. The two business models differ fundamentally in structure.

Large single-site projects allow developers to concentrate development, financing, and construction capabilities in one place. Rooftop solar, by contrast, requires identifying and developing a large number of rooftops spread nationwide under the same standards.

To address that challenge, H Energy is standardizing how rooftop resources are developed and how plant assets are managed. The company's strategy is to turn the resulting plants into investment targets that global capital can enter.

Executives Frame the Deal as a Gateway for Global Capital

"This partnership brings global capital into the rooftop solar market," H Energy CEO Ham Il-han said. "By combining Peak Energy's financial strength and its capabilities in operating renewable energy assets, we will turn rooftops scattered across the country into power generation assets that companies can use to meet their RE100 targets."

RE100 is a global initiative under which companies commit to sourcing all of the electricity they consume from renewable sources, and the partnership is explicitly aimed at helping companies meet those commitments.

Context of the Announcement

The agreement pairs H Energy's domestic rooftop development pipeline with the financial backing of Stonepeak, a global investment firm whose wholly owned subsidiary Peak Energy already operates renewable energy assets across Asia.

By structuring ownership through special purpose companies funded by Peak Energy, the deal is designed to channel international investment into a fragmented market segment that has traditionally been difficult for large-scale capital to access.
