Grenergy (renewable energy company) inaugurated Elena, a 3.5-gigawatt-hour battery storage facility in María Elena, Antofagasta, in a ceremony attended by Chilean President José Antonio Kast Rist and several senior government officials.

The Spanish clean energy company described the plant as the largest battery facility in the Americas and the first major milestone in an ambitious energy and digital infrastructure push in northern Chile.

The inauguration was attended by Minister of Energy Ximena Rincón, Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation Ximena Lincolao, Spanish Ambassador to Chile Laura Oroz, and the Mayor of María Elena, Viviana Cuello, among other authorities.

A Record-Setting Storage Facility

Elena currently comprises 624 containers and 6,240 batteries, with 3.5 GWh of storage already commissioned. Grenergy has outlined in its roadmap through 2028 a planned expansion of the facility to 7 GWh.

The construction of the plant mobilized more than 400 workers and was accompanied by educational and social initiatives in the municipality of María Elena, according to the company.

Elena forms part of Grenergy's broader Oasis de Atacama platform, which integrates 2.5 gigawatts of solar capacity with 14.1 GWh of storage. Grenergy said it is replicating the hybridization model used at Oasis de Atacama in central Chile through a project called Oasis Central, which combines 1.4 GW of solar with 5.1 GWh of storage and is also exporting the model to Spain.

Taken together, the OASIS platforms account for 5 GW of solar generation and 22 GWh of storage.

Northern Chile Energy Hub

Grenergy is positioning Elena as the foundation for what it describes as the largest clean generation hub in northern Chile. The full hub is intended to deliver 2.1 GW of solar and 14 GWh of storage, providing what the company characterizes as round-the-clock manageable energy.

The company said this infrastructure is designed to support the electrification of industry, the decarbonization of mining, and the advancement of electromobility, as well as reducing dependence on volatile fuels.

The company said the hub is also intended to lay the groundwork for attracting digital infrastructure investment and positioning Chile as an artificial intelligence and data center hub for Latin America.

GR Data Platform and Digital Investment Ambitions

Alongside the Elena inauguration, Grenergy provided new details of GR Data, its data center platform in Chile. The company said the platform has a pipeline of 1 GW of IT capacity and could attract up to 25 billion US dollars in direct digital investment to Chile over the next three years.

The first development under GR Data will be Atacama Data, described as an AI training campus to be located near Elena. Atacama Data will begin with 400 MW of IT capacity and is designed to be scalable to 1 GW of IT.

The company said it will carry a guaranteed grid connection at Kimal and will enable large-scale AI model training using renewable energy and without water consumption.

In addition to Atacama Data, Grenergy announced two cloud campuses: Polpaico Campus Norte and Alto Jahuel Campus Sur, which together will contribute 600 MW of IT capacity and will connect with the country's main connectivity nodes.

Grenergy said Chile's combination of clean energy resources and international connectivity infrastructure, including low-latency submarine cables, makes it a competitive location for hyperscale digital operators.

Grenergy's Investment Footprint in Chile

Grenergy has operated in Chile since 2012 and described the country as its main market and the center from which it coordinates its Latin American operations.

The company said it has invested 2.8 billion dollars in Chile to date and plans to invest an additional 2 billion dollars over the next two years, bringing its cumulative investment in the country to 4.8 billion dollars. The company said this makes it one of the three largest international investors in Chile.

Grenergy is a Spanish multinational founded in 2007 that develops, builds, and operates solar photovoltaic plants as well as energy storage projects. It has been listed on the Spanish stock exchange since 2015 and carries a market capitalization of more than 3.5 billion euros.
