Greenvolt Power Opens Battery Storage Facility in Poland, With 600 MW Siedlce Project in Development

Greenvolt Power (renewable energy company) has officially inaugurated its Turośń Kościelna Battery Energy Storage Facility in Podlaskie Voivodeship, near Białystok, marking one of the largest battery energy storage systems to come online in Poland.

 

The facility carries a grid connection capacity of 200 MW and a storage capacity of 800 MWh, enabling it to discharge at full power for approximately four hours.

A Major Addition to Poland's Grid Infrastructure

Connected to the national transmission grid at 110 kV, the Turośń Kościelna facility is designed to draw electricity from the grid when it is more readily available and return it during periods of higher demand.

 

This capability supports the balancing of Poland's National Power System, the provision of ancillary services, and the utilisation of electricity generated by weather-dependent renewable sources such as solar and wind.

The project will also participate in Poland's capacity market from 2028 under a 17-year contract carrying a capacity obligation of 170 MW, equivalent to 85 percent of the facility's total power rating.

 

The long-term contract provides revenue certainty over the facility's operational life and reflects the broader integration of battery storage into Poland's formal capacity mechanisms.

According to Greenvolt, the facility reflects a wider trend in Poland's energy market, where storage is among the fastest-growing segments of the capacity mechanism.

 

In the main auction for the 2028 delivery year, 33 electrochemical energy storage facilities secured contracts with a combined capacity obligation exceeding 1.7 GW. Poland's Energy Regulatory Office recorded that energy storage facilities collectively accounted for 15 percent of the contracted capacity in that auction.

 

Technology and Physical Infrastructure

The facility comprises 196 containerised battery modules and 49 containerised transformer stations spread across a project site of approximately 35,000 square metres. More than 25,000 square metres of that area, representing over 70 percent of the total, is retained as biologically active land.

The system uses lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery technology supplied by BYD Energy Storage. LFP chemistry was selected in part for its durability, and the facility carries an expected operating life of more than 20 years. The system can respond to signals from the grid operator within seconds, a response time significantly faster than that of conventional thermal power plants.

Supporting infrastructure includes monitoring and protection systems, fire safety solutions, and acoustic barriers designed to limit the facility's impact on surrounding areas. P&Q served as general contractor for the project.

The project underwent an environmental and social assessment in line with the standards of the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

 

Both institutions' standards cover the assessment of a project's impact on the environment and local communities, as well as measures to mitigate identified risks.

Greenvolt's Expanding Polish Portfolio

Turośń Kościelna is the first of several large-scale battery projects Greenvolt Power is advancing in Poland. The company said it is finalising the Ełk project in Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship, which carries the same power rating and storage capacity as the newly inaugurated facility, 200 MW and 800 MWh, with commercial operation scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. Combined, the two facilities will provide 400 MW of power and 1.6 GWh of storage capacity.

Beyond Ełk, Greenvolt Power is developing the Siedlce project, planned to have a capacity of 600 MW and 2.4 GWh of battery energy storage. The company described it as set to become the largest BESS project in Poland and one of the largest in Europe.

Context Within Greenvolt's European Strategy

The Turośń Kościelna inauguration follows last month's opening of the Buj Battery Energy Storage System in Hungary, which Greenvolt described as Hungary's largest battery energy storage system currently in operation, with a capacity of 99.8 MW and 288.6 MWh.

 

Together, the Hungarian and Polish facilities illustrate the geographic reach of Greenvolt Power's storage activities across what the company characterised as some of Europe's most dynamic markets for utility-scale storage.

At the group level, Greenvolt said it is actively developing battery storage projects across 13 countries, with a total battery pipeline of 5 GW. João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group, described battery storage as one of the company's key growth drivers, and said that Poland is among the markets where utility-scale energy storage has a particularly important role to play in the energy transition.

The Turośń Kościelna facility strengthens Greenvolt Power's position in Poland alongside the Ełk and Siedlce projects, as the country's power system continues to absorb growing volumes of renewable generation and the demand for flexible, fast-responding storage assets intensifies.
