GreenSquare Opens First Phase of SYD1 AI Data Center Campus in Sydney, Australia

GreenSquare has announced that the first stage of its SYD1 data centre campus in Norwest Business Park, Western Sydney, is now operational, following the adaptive reuse of a data centre originally opened in 1995.

The project was delivered in eight months, transforming the site to support high-density AI workloads with liquid-to-chip cooling and modern infrastructure designed for performance, efficiency, and long-term reliability.

Sharon AI commits to major NVIDIA deployment

SYD1's first customer is NASDAQ-listed NVIDIA Cloud Partner Sharon AI, which will deploy approximately 8,200 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs at the facility.

GreenSquare describes this as a significant deployment of NVIDIA HGX B300 infrastructure in Australia.

Reuse rather than rebuild

Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, GreenSquare adaptively reused the original building, retaining the existing slab and much of the structure. The data halls were relocated to the ground floor, enabling the facility to accommodate the latest-generation, high-density compute without additional structural reinforcement.

According to the company, this approach increased IT capacity within the original building footprint by 275% while substantially reducing structural carbon.

Joshua Martens, GreenSquare's Chief Technology Officer, said the company saw an opportunity to give a 30-year-old data centre a completely new purpose. "By rethinking the building's configuration, introducing prefabricated systems design, and using the latest technology to reduce carbon, we've created a facility that can support some of today's most demanding compute requirements while using resources far more efficiently," he said.

Efficiency performance against NSW benchmarks

SYD1 was designed for energy and water efficiency, with a projected power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.20 and potable water usage effectiveness (WUE) of less than 0.1 litres per kilowatt-hour. Both figures are below the NSW Government guideline benchmarks of 1.25 for PUE and 1.0 for WUE.

The facility uses a closed-loop cooling system that operates without evaporative cooling for approximately 96% of the year, replacing the building's original water-intensive cooling towers. Rainwater harvesting is expected to offset approximately 10% of annual cooling water requirements, further reducing reliance on potable water.

Independent carbon assessment findings

An independent assessment by engineering consultants TTW found that the adaptive reuse of SYD1 retained 92% of the building's existing structural carbon.

The reuse of the existing structure, combined with low-carbon concrete, resulted in 76% lower structural upfront carbon per square metre and 93% lower carbon per kilowatt of IT capacity compared with a new-build facility, according to the assessment.

Construction timeline and safety record

Main construction works began in February 2026, with around 400 people working on site at peak and teams operating around the clock during critical stages of the program. The project recorded more than 350,000 hours worked without a lost-time injury.

GreenSquare worked with Erilyan on constructing and delivering the facility and with Fredon on the electrical infrastructure and commissioning to transform the existing building and bring the first stage into operation.

Expansion plans supported by NSW Government

The facility is the first stage of GreenSquare's SYD1 campus. The NSW Government's Investment Delivery Authority has endorsed support for a proposed 80 MW second stage.

Backed by programs managed by Partners Group, GreenSquare is expanding its Australian data centre portfolio after successfully delivering SYD1 Stage 1, with a continued focus on responsible development, resource efficiency, and long-term performance.

Powering Australia's Data Center Boom with Real-Time Project Intelligence

Australia is on track to become the world's largest data center hub, with hyperscale campuses. But in a market this fast-moving, relying on press releases and outdated databases means losing sight of competitors before ground is even broken. Real-time project visibility isn't optional anymore; it's the difference between winning early and arriving late.

The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research gives data center developers, colocation providers, contractors, and equipment suppliers a live window into every stage of the project lifecycle across the region. From land acquisition to commissioning, you'll know who's building, where, and with whom.

Whether you're targeting hyperscale expansions in emerging markets or subsea-cable-adjacent facilities in established hubs, our platform surfaces the opportunities that matter before your rivals even know they exist.
