Google Breaks Ground on Data Center in Kronstorf, Austria in Europe.
Google has officially broken ground on a new data center in Kronstorf, Austria, marking a significant expansion of the company's digital infrastructure footprint in Europe.
The facility, announced on April 23, 2026, is intended to meet growing demand for Google's digital services and artificial intelligence capabilities, and will bring with it a series of environmental commitments, community initiatives, and educational partnerships tied to the Upper Austria region.
A New Facility in Upper Austria
The Kronstorf data center will generate 100 direct jobs once completed, with thousands of additional roles expected through construction activity, supplier relationships, and spending at local businesses. Google described the investment as placing Upper Austria on what it called the global map of cutting-edge digital infrastructure.
The facility is designed to power the kind of digital services that European users rely on daily, including Google Search, YouTube, Maps, and Workspace, while also extending the company's artificial intelligence capabilities across the continent.
Google has maintained a local office in Austria since 2006 and said its cloud platform and advertising network have supported tens of thousands of Austrian businesses, publishers, nonprofits, creators, and developers over that time.
Thomas Stelzer, Governor of Upper Austria, said the decision to build in Kronstorf was a powerful signal for the region as a hub for business and innovation. He characterized the investment as internationally validating Upper Austria as competitive, reliable, and forward-looking, and said the goal was not simply to use the technologies of tomorrow, but to develop them locally and secure long-term value creation.
Heat Recovery and Green Infrastructure
Environmental design features are central to the facility's construction plan. The Kronstorf data center will be built ready to support off-site heat recovery, meaning that once a suitable recipient partner is identified, heat generated by the facility can be provided free of charge to eligible partners to support the decarbonization of local heating sources.
Google said capturing data center heat represents an opportunity for energy conservation and contributes locally to the broader energy transition. The building will also feature a green roof equipped with solar panels, which Google said will directly contribute clean energy to help power the data center.
The company reiterated its broader ambition to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy on every grid where it operates, and said the Austrian facility is intended to directly support Austrian decarbonization goals while contributing to what it described as a clean, reliable, and affordable energy system.
Google stated that it operates the most energy-efficient data centers in the world and that its approach to cooling prioritizes minimizing net climate impact and using natural resources responsibly.

Investing in the Enns River Watershed
Alongside the construction announcement, Google confirmed the creation of a dedicated fund to improve the water ecosystem of the local Enns River. The fund will be established in collaboration with the Upper Austrian Fisheries Association.
The initiative sits within Google's stated global goal to replenish more freshwater than it consumes by 2030, and reflects what the company described as a climate-conscious approach to managing its impact on local natural resources.
Google said it is collaborating more broadly to improve local watershed health and that the Enns River Fund is a direct expression of that commitment in the Kronstorf context.
A Community Information Center
Google also announced it is currently developing an information center in Kronstorf, intended to serve both the immediate community and the wider region. The center is designed to be a place where residents can discuss and learn about digital infrastructure and its contributions to Austria's society and economy. It will also showcase Google's sustainability efforts related to the facility and its broader operations.
Christian Kolarik, Mayor of Kronstorf and head of the Municipal Association INKOBA Kronstorf-Hargelsberg, said the collaboration between the municipalities of Kronstorf and Hargelsberg, together with the State of Upper Austria, allowed the site to prevail in global competition.
He said that when one of the world's most valuable brands chooses to locate in the region, it speaks to Upper Austria's quality as a place to work and do business.
AI Skills Partnership with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria
The groundbreaking was accompanied by the announcement of a multi-year collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, known locally as FH OÖ. The partnership is focused on building an ongoing curriculum and certifications for students seeking AI upskilling.
Google framed the collaboration as part of its broader commitment to equipping people and businesses in Austria with the knowledge and skills to use modern technologies.
The company said it has trained more than 140,000 individuals in Austria since 2014, including students, educators, small business owners, and developers. It described making digital skills accessible to all as a core part of its presence in the country.
Markus Achleitner, State Minister for Economic Affairs, said Google's arrival in Kronstorf validated Upper Austria's forward-thinking location policy and that cooperation with local municipalities had ensured commercial land was available at the required scale.
He said the planned cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences would expand the province's educational offerings in the field of digital skills.
