Google announced an EUR 5.5 billion investment plan for Germany covering the period from 2026 to 2029, focusing on infrastructure development and office expansion across multiple cities. The investment includes construction of a new data center in Dietzenbach, continued investment in the existing Hanau data center campus, and expanded office locations in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich.

The investment is projected to contribute an average of EUR 1.016 billion to local GDP annually and support approximately 9,000 jobs in Germany through 2029. This announcement represents Google's largest investment program to date in Germany and is part of the company's continued commitment to Europe.

Data Center and Cloud Infrastructure Development

Upon completion, Google will build a new data center in Dietzenbach to strengthen its cloud regions in Germany. These regions are part of Google's global network of 42 regions that deliver high-performance and low-latency services used by businesses and organizations, including Mercedes-Benz and Koenig & Bauer, to build and scale AI-powered solutions.

The company is also continuing to invest in its existing data center facility in Hanau, which opened in 2023. Google Cloud's regions in Germany offer AI services, including Vertex AI with Gemini models. The company will continue delivering sovereign cloud solutions, allowing organizations to adopt advanced cloud and AI capabilities while adhering to local requirements and European values.

Google Cloud's approach ensures German businesses are not locked into any single vendor and have operational flexibility to select the best services for their needs.

Clean Energy and Heat Recovery Initiatives

Google announced the expansion of its 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy partnership with Engie in Germany through 2030. This collaboration, which began in 2021, is scaling up to contribute to Germany's energy transition and grid stability. Engie has assembled a flexible portfolio of carbon-free energy sources to meet Google's evolving regional needs.

The partnership involves purchasing electricity from new German onshore wind and solar projects, optimizing Google's existing clean energy portfolio through battery and hydro storage systems, and integrating off-take from Google's long-term agreement with Ørsted's Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm. Google's German operations are projected to run at or near 85% carbon-free energy in 2026.

Google has maintained a 100% renewable energy match globally every year since 2017 and is pursuing a goal to run on carbon-free energy 24/7 on every grid where it operates.

The company detailed a collaboration with Energieversorgung Offenbach (EVO), the local district heating provider in Dietzenbach, to capture and repurpose excess heat from the forthcoming data center. This collaboration will enable EVO to supply more than 2,000 local households with heating through the district heating network. This initiative marks Google's first heat-recovery project in Germany and follows its pilot project in Finland.

Office Expansion Across German Cities

In Munich, Google is proceeding with the expansion of the Arnulfpost by revitalizing the historic building. This investment will establish a development center providing 30,000 square meters of office space for up to 2,000 employees. The project will create public areas accessible to all Munich citizens upon completion at the end of 2026.

Google has expanded into the 24th floor of the Global Tower in Frankfurt, making it the company's highest office in Germany. This new space includes a fully equipped Google office and a TechTalk conference room for up to 100 guests.

The company is also expanding its Berlin office by converting former digital studios into three additional floors, each equipped with meeting rooms, a new TechTalk conference room facing the Spree River, and a new demo space.

German government officials welcomed the investment announcement. Lars Klingbeil, Federal Minister of Finance, called the investments “genuine future-proof investments: in innovation, in Artificial Intelligence, and in the climate-neutral transformation.” Dr. Karsten Wildberger, Federal Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernization, stated that Google's investment shows Germany is “an attractive location for investments in digital infrastructure.”

Philipp Justus, Country Manager Germany and VP Central Europe, Google, said the investment will give businesses, public institutions, and people throughout Germany “even better access to our technology, thus supporting the digital transformation.” Marianne Janik, VP Google Cloud EMEA North, emphasized that “a sovereign digital future must be built in Europe, for Europe.”
