South Africa has commissioned the first phase of its largest wind farm cluster, with the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm Phase One now in commercial operation following a ceremony attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng.
The 155 MW facility, developed by Seriti Green and equipped with turbines supplied by Chinese manufacturer Goldwind, represents the first utility-scale wind project to enter operation in Mpumalanga Province.
Project Scale and Technical Specifications
Phase one of the Ummbila Emoyeni complex is powered by 25 Goldwind GWH182-6.2 MW smart turbines, each featuring a rotor diameter of 183.5 metres. According to Goldwind, this gives the project the largest rotor diameter of any operational wind project in South Africa to date.
The turbines were customised to handle the province's specific environmental conditions, including its high-altitude wind patterns and frequent thunderstorm activity.
The units are fitted with an intelligent control platform that integrates health diagnostics, load adaptation and grid-friendly technologies designed to protect both equipment and the power grid under extreme weather.
During commissioning, the full site underwent rigorous provincial and national grid connection tests, which Goldwind said demonstrated the strong grid adaptability of the GWH182-6.2 MW model in demanding conditions.
The facility is projected to generate approximately 480,000 MWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power roughly 500,000 households, and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 400,000 tonnes per year.

The Broader Ummbila Complex
The Ummbila complex is designed as an integrated renewable energy hub with a total planned capacity of 750 MW of wind generation, 150 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and 800 MWh of energy storage. Construction of Phases two and three is already underway following the Phase one commissioning, with full completion of the cluster targeted for 2027.
At the commissioning ceremony, Goldwind and Seriti Green also signed a cooperation agreement for Phase four of the project, further extending the partnership between the two companies into future development at the site.

Political Significance and Bilateral Relations
The commissioning ceremony drew senior representatives from both the South African government and Chinese diplomatic and business circles. President Ramaphosa described the project as a pivotal milestone for South Africa's Just Energy Transition and its national sustainable development agenda.
He credited Goldwind as the wind turbine solution provider behind the project's delivery and said the facility is steering the country's economy and society toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient path while helping fulfil South Africa's domestic and international sustainability commitments.
Chinese Ambassador Wu Peng offered congratulations and described the undertaking as a compelling testament to pragmatic and fruitful China-South Africa bilateral collaboration.
Peter Venn, CEO of Seriti Green, described Goldwind as an indispensable long-term partner. "We look forward to deepening cooperation on future project phases," he said.
Goldwind Deputy Chairman and President Cao Zhigang, who also attended the ceremony, said the project achieved commercial operation ahead of schedule. "This is not just a wind farm; it is a strategic project that delivers reliable power, drives infrastructure investment, creates local jobs and advances community development. We are delivering more than clean energy; we are delivering a long-term commitment rooted in South Africa," Cao said.
Employment and Just Transition Implications
The Ummbila project carries particular significance given Mpumalanga's historical role as the heart of South Africa's coal industry. During Phase one construction, more than 1,200 jobs were created, with peak employment across the full cluster expected to reach 2,000 workers.
Goldwind noted that more than 50 percent of roles in the wind sector overlap with skills held by coal sector workers, positioning the project as a practical pathway for local workers transitioning away from fossil fuel employment.
The project's location in Mpumalanga, a province heavily dependent on coal mining and coal-fired power generation, lends it additional weight within the context of South Africa's Just Energy Transition framework, which seeks to manage the social and economic consequences of shifting away from coal.
Goldwind's South African and African Footprint
Goldwind first entered the African market in 2010 and has since operated in South Africa for sixteen years. The company has framed its regional strategy around what it describes as an "In Africa, For Africa" commitment.
With the Ummbila Emoyeni project and other installations, Goldwind said its installed capacity in South Africa is on track to exceed 2.2 gigawatts by the second quarter of 2027.
To support its growing operational base in the country, Goldwind has established a local SCADA monitoring centre and a spare parts hub offering around-the-clock operations and maintenance support. In 2025, the company opened what it calls a Solution Factory in Cape Town, which provides Global Wind Organisation safety training, drone blade inspection services and predictive maintenance capabilities.
The Ummbila commissioning also drew attendance from Seriti Resources Group CEO Mike Teke alongside national, provincial and local government officials and community leaders, reflecting the breadth of stakeholders involved in a project that sits at the intersection of energy infrastructure, foreign investment and social policy in one of Africa's largest economies.
