GIGA Storage has reached financial close on a EUR 300 million package to support the construction of GIGA Leopard, a 300MW/1200MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Delfzijl, Groningen. Construction has officially begun, with commissioning targeted for the second half of 2027.
Once operational, the project will have the capacity to supply renewable energy to all Dutch households for over 30 minutes, marking a major advancement in energy storage infrastructure for the Netherlands.
Situated near a key offshore wind production hub, the GIGA Leopard project will be connected to TenneT’s high-voltage grid via an existing substation. Its location and scale aim to support grid flexibility, renewable energy integration, and system reliability.
The EUR 300 million in financing was arranged as a "club deal" with participation from eight European lenders. Santander CIB and Clifford Chance advised GIGA Storage, while Norton Rose Fulbright supported the lenders. Infrastructure investment firm InfraVia became a majority shareholder in GIGA Storage in June 2024.
Commitment to Energy Transition
GIGA Storage plans to deliver the project on schedule and continues to develop a pipeline of utility-scale storage systems exceeding 2GW across Europe. The company’s mission is to accelerate the energy transition by enabling the retirement of fossil fuel power plants and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid.
With the launch of GIGA Leopard, GIGA Storage reinforces its role in building a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable European energy system.
