Fortescue Signs Global Green Technology Partnerships to Accelerate Industrial Decarbonization by 2030
Fortescue has announced a series of international partnerships with leading green technology companies during the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 25, 2025, as part of its strategy to achieve Real Zero emissions by 2030 and build the lowest-cost 24/7 energy system that outcompetes fossil fuels. The mining company is building global alliances that link the Pilbara's operational expertise with research and development strength from America and Australia, innovation and engineering excellence from the UK and Europe, and manufacturing capability in China and the US.
These partnerships will enable Fortescue to electrify its Pilbara operations while catalyzing decarbonization globally.
Strategic Green Energy Partnerships
Fortescue has signed individual Heads of Agreements with three global renewable energy leaders. BYD, the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicles and batteries with almost one million employees, will supply leading energy storage solutions. The company sold more than 4 million new energy vehicles in 2024. LONGi, one of the world's largest solar technology companies and a global leader in high-efficiency photovoltaic products, will supply photovoltaic modules and solar technology.
The company provides what Fortescue describes as the lowest-cost form of green energy generation. Envision Energy, a global leader in wind power and smart energy solutions, will supply advanced wind turbine and integrated energy solution technologies that combine diverse renewable sources and optimize power availability.
Battery Electric Mining Fleet Transformation
Fortescue will implement a dual supplier approach to accelerate the decarbonization of its mining fleet through partnerships with XCMG and Liebherr. The company plans to deploy 300 to 400 zero-emission, 240-tonne haul trucks in what it describes as the world's first large-scale deployment of battery-electric haul trucks. XCMG is expected to supply up to half of Fortescue's future battery electric haul truck fleet, with phased deliveries planned from 2028 to 2030.
This agreement expands on a contract signed in November 2024 for battery electric ancillary mining equipment, which was XCMG's largest green mining equipment order outside China at the time. Liebherr, with its manufacturing facilities in the US, is expected to provide at minimum the other half of the haul truck fleet and electric excavators under an amendment to a partnership announced in September 2024. The European company already plays a pivotal role in decarbonizing Fortescue's mining fleet through the production of T 264 trucks in Virginia.

Wind Technology Acquisition and Development
Fortescue has completed the acquisition of 100 percent of Spanish renewable technology company Nabrawind, consolidating its previous minority stake to take full ownership. The acquisition positions Fortescue to deliver large-scale wind projects in the Pilbara, utilizing Nabrawind's innovative self-lifting tower design, which enables turbines to be installed at greater heights, capturing stronger winds and generating more power.
The company will combine this acquisition with the purchase of wind turbines from Envision Energy for the first stage of Fortescue's inaugural wind project. Envision Energy will supply its EN182-7.8MW turbines engineered to perform in low-wind conditions and withstand extreme weather, including cyclones. These turbines will be integrated with Nabrawind's 188-meter tower technology to provide improved generation and cost efficiency.
Global Research and Development Network
The partnerships are supported by Fortescue Zero, the company's innovation division that utilizes a global network of research and development facilities. This includes the Colorado Technology Hub in the United States, advanced technology collaborations with CSIRO in Australia, and an R&D center in Oxford, United Kingdom. Fortescue Zero will continue to focus on developing and integrating advanced power systems for the company's fleet, including optimization of battery electric truck performance in Pilbara conditions.
The division serves as what the company describes as its “engine room of innovation” for delivering technology solutions that underpin progress towards Real Zero. Executive Chairman and Founder Dr. Andrew Forrest, AO, stated that the world once benefited from open trade and cooperation, but is now divided. He said Fortescue is demonstrating that industry can help restore multilateral spirit through practical alliances that prove heavy industry can follow a new path where profits rise as emissions fall.
Dr. Forrest noted that China is scaling and manufacturing green technologies at unprecedented speed, and the partnerships give Fortescue access to that capability. He described the collaboration as truly multilateral, drawing on the best ideas and manufacturing capacity to deliver the lowest cost energy and tackle climate change. The urgency of Fortescue's action has been influenced by new research published in Nature, which quantifies, for the first time, the contributions of individual companies to increases in the intensity and probability of hundreds of heatwaves worldwide between 2000 and 2023.
These findings highlight growing legal, regulatory, financial, and reputational risks that fossil fuel-reliant companies face.
