Ford Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, and EDF Power Solutions North America have announced the signing of a five-year framework agreement that would give EDF Power Solutions access to up to 20 gigawatt hours of battery energy storage systems over the term of the deal.

Deal Structure and Scale

Under the terms of the framework agreement, EDF Power Solutions North America will have the ability to procure up to 4 gigawatt hours of DC Block battery energy storage systems annually from Ford Energy. The total potential volume across the five-year term reaches up to 20 GWh. Deliveries under the agreement are expected to begin in 2028.

The agreement positions Ford Energy as a key battery energy storage system supplier for EDF Power Solutions' growing portfolio of grid-scale energy storage projects across the United States. Both companies are headquartered in different locations, with the announcement issued jointly from Dearborn, Michigan, and San Diego.

What Ford Energy Is Supplying

The product at the center of the agreement is the Ford Energy DC Block, a standardized, 20-foot containerized energy storage system. Each unit carries a rated capacity of 5.45 megawatt hours and utilizes 512 ampere-hour lithium iron phosphate prismatic cells.

The system is available in both 2-hour and 4-hour discharge configurations and operates within a voltage range of 1,040 to 1,500 volts DC. The DC Block also features integrated liquid-cooled thermal management.

According to the companies, the DC Block is designed for utility-scale applications, including frequency regulation, voltage support, energy arbitrage, peak load shifting, demand response, backup power, and microgrid integration.

What Each Party Is Bringing to the Agreement

For EDF Power Solutions North America, an entity of the EDF Group, the deal provides supply chain visibility and product assurance as it continues to expand its energy storage portfolio across North America. The agreement is aimed at supporting grid-scale renewable integration and grid resilience.

For Ford Energy, the deal represents a commercial validation of its strategy to serve large-scale energy storage customers requiring consistent quality and long-term operational reliability. Ford Energy describes itself as having been purpose-built to serve customers who require certainty in their energy storage supply chain.

Executives View

Lisa Drake, president of Ford Energy, framed the agreement as confirmation of market demand for a battery energy storage system supplier that pairs industrial-scale manufacturing discipline with full lifecycle accountability.

"We are not simply delivering hardware," Drake said. "We are delivering the kind of predictable quality and long-term operational confidence that grid operators and large-scale developers require. Ford Energy was purpose-built to serve customers who cannot afford uncertainty in their energy storage supply chain."

Tristan Grimbert, chief executive officer of EDF Power Solutions North America, cited supply chain reliability and product quality as the primary drivers behind the partnership.

"Ford Energy's commitment to domestic manufacturing and its rigorous approach to traceability and lifecycle support align with the standards we hold across our portfolio," Grimbert said. "This framework agreement gives us the supply visibility and product confidence we need to execute at the pace the energy transition demands."

Broader Context

The agreement reflects what both companies describe as growing demand for domestically supplied, utility-grade energy storage at scale. The deal also speaks to a broader industry push to accelerate the deployment of reliable, long-duration storage infrastructure intended to strengthen the United States power grid.

EDF Power Solutions North America operates across multiple clean energy technologies, including onshore and offshore wind, solar photovoltaic, storage, and electric vehicle charging, and serves grid-scale, distribution-scale, and onsite customers across North America.
