The Wambo Wind Farm in Queensland's Western Downs region has commenced generating renewable electricity, marking a significant milestone in Australia's renewable energy efforts. Developed through a joint venture between Cubico Sustainable Investments and Stanwell Corporation, the project aims to enhance Queensland's clean energy capacity.

Construction of the Wambo Wind Farm began in 2023, with the first turbines becoming operational in May 2025. The initial phase involves 42 Vestas V162-6.0 MW turbines, contributing 252 megawatts (MW) to the grid. Upon completion of both stages, the wind farm is expected to generate over 500 MW, sufficient to power approximately 312,000 homes annually.

The development of the Wambo Wind Farm has created approximately 400 construction jobs and is projected to contribute $5 million annually to the local economy. Additionally, the project has established a Community Benefit Fund, providing grants to local organizations for various community initiatives.

Cultural and Environmental Considerations

Located on the traditional lands of the Western Wakka Wakka and Barunggam peoples, the project has incorporated measures to preserve cultural heritage sites. Environmental assessments were conducted to ensure the protection of local ecosystems during construction.

Future Developments

The second stage of the Wambo Wind Farm, comprising 41 additional turbines, is scheduled for completion in 2026. This expansion will further bolster Queensland's renewable energy infrastructure and support the state's clean energy objectives.
