Copenhagen-based European Energy has officially opened its first battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Baltics at its renewable energy park in Anyksciai, Lithuania.
The Hybrid Facility Combines Storage with 78.5 MW of Solar
The 25 MW / 65 MWh battery sits alongside the company's 78.5 MW solar park, creating a hybrid facility that combines renewable generation and storage at a single site.
"With the opening of our first battery project in the Baltics, we are adding flexibility to our activities in Lithuania and demonstrating how solar generation and battery storage can work together," said Tadeusas Konkovskis, Vice President and Head of the Baltic Region at European Energy.

Grid Connection and Project Scale
The Anyksciai battery was connected to Lithuania's electricity transmission grid in spring 2026. According to the company, it is the second project in Lithuania connected to the transmission grid to combine a large-scale solar power plant and battery energy storage at a single site.
The project covers approximately 120 hectares and is expected to generate around 80,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 34,000 households.
The battery adds flexibility by storing and supplying electricity according to the needs of the electricity system. European Energy notes that as the share of solar and wind power increases, storage can help balance generation fluctuations and support the integration of additional renewable energy capacity.

Investor Interest in Storage and Hybrid Assets
European Energy has expanded its battery storage activities across several markets in recent years and sees storage as complementary to its solar and wind portfolio.
The company views storage as an increasingly relevant part of the renewable energy investment market, with opportunities to develop and operate projects and bring in long-term investors at different stages of the project lifecycle.
"We see increasing investor interest in storage and hybrid renewable energy assets. This fits well with our business model, where we develop projects, bring them into operation, and can introduce long-term owners at different stages of the project lifecycle. Lithuania and the wider Baltic region are markets where we see considerable potential," said Thorvald Spanggaard, Executive Vice President and Head of Project Development at European Energy.
Official Opening Attended by Government and Grid Officials
The official opening was attended by Lithuania's Minister of Energy Lukas Savickas, Danish Ambassador to Lithuania Grete Sillasen, Litgrid CEO Andrius Semeskevicius, and Deputy Mayor of Anyksciai District Municipality Audronė Savickienė, as well as representatives from European Energy, project partners, and members of the Lithuanian energy sector.
Continued Expansion in Lithuania
European Energy entered the Lithuanian market in 2018 and currently operates more than 400 MW of renewable energy capacity in the country. Its portfolio of solar, wind and energy storage projects under development in Lithuania amounts to approximately 800 MW.
The company has invested approximately USD 539.8 million in renewable energy projects in Lithuania and plans to continue expanding its battery storage activities there. A further battery project with approximately 12 MW of power and 50 MWh of energy capacity is under construction in Telšiai.
In the Skuodas district, European Energy is also developing the Skuodas Renew project, planned to combine onshore wind, solar power and battery storage at a single site.
