European Energy has started hydrogen production at its expanded Måde Power-to-X facility in Denmark, increasing the site's electrolyzer capacity from 3.1 MW to 8.1 MW. The company announced on December 22, 2025, that the upgraded facility has entered active commissioning following the successful installation of an additional electrolyzer unit.

The expansion represents a significant milestone in European Energy's Power-to-X operations, with the facility now equipped to test multiple electrolyzer technologies while scaling hydrogen production capabilities. The company has also secured ISO 9001 certification as part of the regulatory framework for hydrogen distribution in Denmark.

Facility Expansion and Equipment Upgrades

The Måde Power-to-X facility previously operated commercially with a 3.1 MW electrolyzer manufactured by Stiesdal. The expansion project involved two parallel workstreams, increasing the total capacity to 8.1 MW. Plug Power manufactured the newly installed electrolyzer, while the original Stiesdal unit was replaced with an updated model from the same manufacturer.

The first hydrogen production from the new Plug Power electrolyzer occurred on December 10, 2025, during an initial operational run. The system delivered output at 10 percent capacity and 40 bar pressure during this test, marking the transition from installation to the active commissioning phase. This milestone reflects the steady progression of European Energy's Power-to-X activities in Denmark.

The upgrade of the original Stiesdal electrolyzer was designed to align the facility with current technical standards and support reliable operations as production scales over time. This dual approach allows the facility to operate with equipment from different manufacturers while maintaining operational efficiency and technical compatibility.

Commissioning Process and Operational Timeline

The facility is currently undergoing a comprehensive commissioning process that will continue for the next three to four weeks. This phase includes ongoing system tuning, performance optimization, and verification activities that are standard for Power-to-X assets. The commissioning process ensures that equipment, control systems, and safety processes operate in accordance with design expectations.

During the commissioning phase, European Energy will conduct further performance and safety verification to ensure the facility meets operational requirements. Once these phases are complete, the facility will be ready to supply hydrogen commercially to end users. The company expects the facility to deliver 550 tonnes of green hydrogen in 2026, equivalent to approximately 1,500 truckloads.

European Energy first achieved hydrogen production at the Måde facility in June 2024, establishing the operational foundation for the current expansion. The company intends to use the facility to test various electrolyzers to evaluate their commercial performance under operational conditions.

Regulatory Compliance and Certification

European Energy has completed the required audits to obtain ISO 9001 certification for operations as a gas distributor in Denmark. This certification forms part of the regulatory framework governing hydrogen delivery to end users and demonstrates the company's compliance with quality management standards for hydrogen distribution.

The hydrogen produced at the Måde facility will be certified as RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) Hydrogen under the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) scheme. This certification ensures that the hydrogen meets renewable energy standards and can support decarbonization efforts across various industrial applications.

Strategic Objectives and Technology Testing

Lars Dyrholm, Director and Head of PtX Asset Management & Operations at European Energy, emphasized the strategic importance of the expansion. “Expanding the electrolysis capacity at Måde is an important step in advancing our work with Power-to-X. The new unit allows us to test system performance under operational conditions and supports our aim to develop commercially viable hydrogen production based on up-to-date technical standards,” Dyrholm stated.

The facility's design enables European Energy to test multiple electrolyzer technologies from different manufacturers, providing valuable operational data for commercial hydrogen production. This approach allows the company to evaluate equipment performance, reliability, and efficiency under real-world operating conditions while building expertise in deploying Power-to-X technology.

The expanded Måde facility represents European Energy's continued investment in renewable hydrogen production infrastructure in Denmark. The 8.1 MW capacity positions the facility as a significant contributor to Denmark's growing Power-to-X sector while supporting the development of commercially viable green hydrogen supply chains.
