Equinor and its partners have made a new oil and gas discovery in the Fram area, located nine kilometers north of the Troll field in the North Sea. The exploration well, drilled by the COSL Innovator drilling rig, encountered petroleum in two separate reservoirs on August 25, 2025.

Discovery Details

The exploration well revealed two distinct discoveries within the exact location. One discovery contains both oil and gas, while the second discovery consists of gas only. The total resources from both discoveries are estimated to range between 0.1 and 1.1 million standard cubic meters. The reservoir properties have been assessed as moderate to very good, indicating favorable conditions for potential extraction. The preliminary designation for this discovery is F-South.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure

The discovery's location in the Fram area positions it within a region that already has well-developed infrastructure. This proximity to existing facilities could facilitate future development and extraction operations. Geir Sørtveit, Equinor's senior vice president for Exploration & Production West on the Norwegian continental shelf, described the findings as “discoveries in an interesting area with a well-developed infrastructure.” He noted that Equinor has made several discoveries in the neighboring area in recent years.

Future Development Plans

The licensees involved in the discovery will evaluate options for connecting F-South to existing or future infrastructure. This tie-back approach could leverage the area's established facilities to make the discovery commercially viable. Sørtveit indicated that Equinor plans to continue exploration activities in the area. “We plan to further explore the area. We believe that we may encounter more, both oil and gas,” he stated, suggesting the potential for additional discoveries in the region.

The company's exploration strategy appears focused on maximizing the potential of this area, building on the infrastructure investments already in place and the geological promise demonstrated by recent discoveries in the neighborhood.
