Equinor Prepares to Begin Drilling Operations at Rosebank Field in UK North Sea
Equinor is preparing to begin drilling operations for the Rosebank field development west of Shetland, marking a key milestone for one of the UK Continental Shelf's largest undeveloped oil and gas projects. The Norwegian energy company is moving forward with drilling plans as part of a comprehensive development strategy for the significant offshore project.
Field Location and Technical Specifications
The Rosebank field lies about 130 km (81 miles) northwest of the Shetland Islands in the Faroe-Shetland Channel, positioned in water depths of roughly 1,100 m (3,608 ft). The challenging deepwater location places the project in one of the UK's most technically demanding offshore environments.
The development plan includes drilling four production wells and three water-injection wells during the first phase of operations. The project structure allows for potential expansion, with additional wells planned for a later phase depending on early results from the initial drilling campaign.
Production and Export Infrastructure
Produced hydrocarbons will be transported through new subsea flowlines to a redeployed floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO), where the fluids will be processed before export. The FPSO will serve as the central processing hub for the field's production operations.
Gas from the project will be transported through a new pipeline linked to the West of Shetland Pipeline System, providing connectivity to existing regional infrastructure. Oil production will be handled differently, with crude oil being offloaded to shuttle tankers for transport to market.

Project Timeline and Development Progress
Subsea installation work began in 2024, establishing the foundation infrastructure for the field development. First drilling is planned for early 2026, with first oil targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, according to project documentation.
The Rosebank development is expected to operate for approximately 25 years once production begins, representing a long-term commitment to North Sea operations. The extended operational timeline reflects the scale and significance of the resource base.
Project Ownership and Operations
Equinor serves as the operator of the project on behalf of license partners Equinor UK Ltd. and Ithaca SP E&P Ltd. The partnership structure combines Equinor's operational expertise with regional partners familiar with UK Continental Shelf operations.
The project represents a major investment in UK North Sea development, utilizing advanced offshore technologies to access deepwater resources in the challenging West of Shetland region. The field development incorporates modern subsea systems and processing capabilities designed for the harsh operating environment.
