Italian energy company Eni has announced the start of Phase 2 of its Congo LNG project ahead of schedule, following the arrival of the Nguya FLNG floating liquefaction unit and the introduction of gas into the new offshore infrastructure system. The company aims to export the first LNG cargo from this phase in early 2026.

Project Infrastructure and Capacity

Congo LNG Phase 2 features three production platforms alongside the Scarabeo 5 unit dedicated to gas treatment and compression, and the Nguya FLNG for liquefaction and export. This configuration brings the overall project's capacity to 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), equivalent to 4.5 billion cubic meters per year. The integrated setup enables the full development of gas resources from the offshore Nené and Litchendjili fields, located in the Marine XII license.

The system ensures flexible, phased management of volumes, guaranteeing a steady flow to both the Tango FLNG unit, which has been operational since late 2023, and the newly introduced Nguya FLNG.

Construction Timeline and Technical Specifications

Phase 2 has come on stream just 35 months after construction of the Nguya FLNG began, setting what Eni describes as a new benchmark within the industry for execution speed and efficiency. This milestone was achieved through a combination of technological innovation, rigorous industrial planning, and strong engagement with local stakeholders. The Nguya FLNG measures 376 meters long and 60 meters wide, employing advanced technologies designed to reduce its carbon footprint.

The unit is engineered to process gas with different compositions, supporting the potential development of additional fields in the area. The Scarabeo 5, converted from a drilling rig into a gas treatment, separation, and compression unit, incorporates decarbonization-oriented solutions and serves as an example of circular economy and industrial reuse.

Local Impact and Energy Sector Contributions

A significant part of the project was carried out entirely in Congo, enhancing the skills of the local workforce and further strengthening the national industrial sector. Eni has maintained a presence in the Republic of the Congo for over 55 years and remains committed to developing the country's significant gas resources. The company supplies gas to the Centrale Électrique du Congo, which provides 70 percent of the nation's power generation capacity.

Eni is also contributing to the upgrade of the transmission network by rehabilitating the high-voltage line between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville.

Additional Development Initiatives

Beyond the LNG project, Eni is active in initiatives supporting the energy transition, including the agri-feedstock project, which integrates the country into the biofuel value chain and represents an important driver of development for the agro-industrial sector. The company is engaged in a wide range of initiatives to improve local communities' access to energy, water, and healthcare, as well as to promote economic diversification.

The announcement was made in San Donato, Milan, on December 2, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Eni's operations in the Republic of the Congo and the broader West African LNG market.
