ENGIE has secured its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in India with a capacity of 280 MW/560 MWh, marking the company's entry into India's utility-scale energy storage market. The project was awarded under Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited's (GUVNL) national tender for 2 GW/4 GWh and is scheduled for commissioning in 2027.

The GUVNL BESS project represents ENGIE's second-largest BESS project worldwide. The system will store up to 2 hours of electricity, absorbing excess generation during low-demand periods and delivering power during peak consumption periods.

Project Specifications and Timeline

The 280 MW battery energy storage system will have a total energy capacity of 560 MWh. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited, a state-owned enterprise under the Government of Gujarat, located in the western part of the country and specializing in the electricity sector, awarded the project through a national tender process. The tender covered a total capacity of 2 GW/4 GWh across multiple projects.

ENGIE expects to commission the project in 2027. The battery system is designed to provide grid stability services by storing excess renewable energy during periods of low electricity demand and releasing it during peak consumption periods.

ENGIE's Growing Presence in India

As of June 30, 2025, ENGIE had nearly 2 GW of wind and solar project capacity in operation or under construction in India. This existing portfolio supports India's national ambition to reach 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The company has identified India as a strategic growth market and aims to increase its installed renewable energy and storage capacity in the country to 7 GW by 2030.

The battery storage project strengthens ENGIE's position in India's rapidly expanding renewable energy sector. In India, where solar and wind energy sources are growing rapidly, large-scale storage systems are critical to delivering clean power on demand and ensuring grid stability.

Global Battery Energy Storage Portfolio

The Indian project contributes to ENGIE's expanding global battery energy storage portfolio. As of June 30, 2025, the Group's BESS portfolio in operation or under construction totaled 5.6 GW worldwide. This portfolio supports ENGIE's broader goal of reaching 95 GW of renewable and storage capacity by 2030.

Paulo Almirante, ENGIE Senior Executive Vice President in charge of Renewable and Flexible Power, stated that “This first large-scale battery storage project in India marks a decisive step for ENGIE in a fast-growing market for renewables and storage. It illustrates our commitment to accelerating the energy transition wherever we operate, while delivering flexibility, stability, and security to power systems.”

The 280 MW Indian project represents a significant addition to ENGIE's global energy storage capabilities and demonstrates the company's commitment to expanding its presence in key renewable energy markets. The project will contribute to grid stability in Gujarat while supporting India's renewable energy expansion goals.
