ENGIE Romania to Build Two Battery Energy Storage Systems in Galați and Sibiu Counties
ENGIE Romania announced plans to develop two major battery energy storage projects in Galați and Sibiu counties, supporting the modernization of the national energy grid and helping ENGIE Group achieve its goal of 95 GW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2030.
Galați Wind Farm Battery Storage Project
The first project will be implemented within the operational wind farm in Băleni commune, Galați county, which has an installed capacity of 50 MW. The battery system will have a power of 5 MW and a storage capacity of 10 MWh, allowing energy delivery to the grid for a maximum of two hours at full capacity through LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology, recognized for its durability and safety.
The configuration will also allow extending the delivery duration from 2 to 4 hours, depending on future grid requirements. The system is designed to capture surplus energy when production exceeds grid capacity and to provide primarily system services (frequency regulation, balancing, etc.) and balancing services for the wind power plant. Construction work is planned to begin in the first quarter of next year, with commissioning estimated for summer 2026.
Sibiu Large-Scale Storage Development
The second project will be located in Șelimbăr locality, Sibiu county. ENGIE Romania recently acquired the rights to the project, with construction work planned to begin in November 2025. With an installed power of 80 MW and a storage capacity of 160 MWh, the project represents a significant investment in the central area of the country. The system will be built on approximately 2 hectares of land and will use LFP technology, ensuring operational stability and safety.
ENGIE is also analyzing a potential extension of storage duration from 2 hours to 4 hours. The project is in the “Ready-to-Build” stage, having all necessary authorizations for starting work. Commercial operation is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Grid Flexibility and Energy Security Enhancement
Both projects, ranging between 5 MW/10 MWh and 80 MW/160 MWh, will be able to deliver electricity to the grid for two hours at maximum capacity, thus contributing to improving grid stability and reducing imbalances. With the growing need for advanced grid flexibility solutions, battery energy storage systems play an essential role in balancing supply and demand and consolidating Romania's energy security.
“Flexibility solutions, such as battery energy storage, become essential for the stability and resilience of the energy system. The two projects consolidate ENGIE's position as a trusted partner in the energy transition and reaffirm our commitment to a sustainable and decarbonized future. In addition, we have planned initiatives that will bring our total installed battery storage capacity to approximately 300 MW by 2030,” declared Cristian Buzan, Vice President of ENGIE Romania.
