ENGIE has announced the full commissioning of the Red Sea Wind Energy project, now the largest operational wind farm in the Middle East and Africa. Located in Ras Ghareb, Egypt, the wind farm has reached its total capacity of 650 megawatts (MW) following the early completion of a 150 MW expansion phase in June 2025.

The Red Sea Wind Energy project is set to supply clean, locally generated electricity to over one million households across Egypt. It is also expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by approximately 1.3 million metric tons. The project operates under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), securing long-term revenue and contributing to the country's decarbonisation targets.

The wind farm was developed by a consortium comprising ENGIE, Orascom Construction PLC, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation. Financing was provided by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), in coordination with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, The Norinchukin Bank, Société Générale, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The development included several phases of intermediate commissioning, culminating in the final 150 MW segment being delivered four months ahead of schedule.

ENGIE has confirmed it is advancing another wind energy project in the same region, which will exceed 900 MW in capacity. With nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of installed wind power capacity now in operation in Egypt, the company has significantly expanded its footprint in Africa and the Middle East.

The commissioning of the Red Sea Wind Energy project marks a major step forward for Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions and strengthens ENGIE’s role in the global transition to low-carbon energy.
