EnBW Completes Installation of All 64 Wind Turbines at He Dreiht Offshore Wind Farm in Germany

EnBW (an energy producer and energy supplier) has reached a significant construction milestone at its He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the North Sea, with manufacturer Vestas completing the installation of all 64 wind turbines at the site. The completion of turbine installation moves the 960-megawatt project closer to full commissioning, which EnBW expects to achieve by late summer.

A Record-Setting Project in the North Sea

He Dreiht holds the distinction of being Germany's largest offshore wind farm, situated approximately 85 kilometers northwest of Borkum and 110 kilometers west of Heligoland.

 

The farm's 64 turbines each carry an individual output of 15 megawatts, bringing the installation's combined capacity to 960 megawatts in total. EnBW has stated that at full operation, He Dreiht will be capable of generating enough electricity to meet the annual energy needs of around 1.1 million households.

The scale of the investment reflects the project's ambition. EnBW is channeling approximately 2.4 billion euros into He Dreiht, making it the German energy company's largest offshore undertaking to date. Notably, the wind farm is being constructed entirely without state funding, a point that underscores the commercial structure underpinning the development.

 

Commissioning Work Now Underway

With turbine installation complete, the project now moves into its next phase. Technical and electrical commissioning work is scheduled to take place over the coming weeks, with the full operational target set for late summer. The project is being coordinated out of EnBW's offshore office in Hamburg.

Peter Heydecker, Board Member for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure at EnBW, described the milestone as a reflection of the company's broader strategic direction.

 

"We have reached another important milestone at He Dreiht following the completion of the wind turbine installation work. Offshore wind is a domestic, renewable energy source that can generate considerable amounts of electricity for many hours a year, thus playing a key role in maintaining security of supply and decarbonizing the electricity system," Heydecker said.

 

He added that He Dreiht, as EnBW's largest offshore project to date, reflects the company's commitment to advancing its generation portfolio toward climate neutrality.

Rotor Blade Damage Under Investigation

The milestone announcement was accompanied by a disclosure that Vestas is currently investigating damage to a rotor blade that occurred in late July. EnBW did not provide further details on the nature or extent of the damage, nor did the company indicate whether the incident would affect the commissioning timeline. Vestas is leading the investigation as the turbine manufacturer responsible for the installation.

Power Purchase Agreements and Ownership Structure

He Dreiht's electricity output has been substantially secured through long-term commercial arrangements ahead of full operation. EnBW stated that the majority of the electricity generated by the wind farm has already been locked in through long-term power purchase agreements. The company noted it is in discussions with additional potential buyers to cover the remaining volumes not yet contracted.

The ownership of the project is shared between EnBW and a consortium of institutional investors. Allianz Global Investors, AIP Management, and Norges Bank Investment Management together hold a 49.9 percent stake in He Dreiht, while EnBW retains the controlling interest.

Context Within EnBW's Wider Investment Strategy

He Dreiht is a central element of EnBW's broader push to transform from a conventional energy utility into what the company describes as a sustainable infrastructure partner.

 

EnBW has outlined plans to invest up to 50 billion euros by 2030, with approximately 85 percent of that total directed into Germany. The company has set a target for renewable energies to make up around 80 percent of its generation portfolio by the end of the decade.

EnBW employs around 31,500 people and supplies energy to approximately 5.5 million customers across all stages of the energy value chain, from generation and trading through to grid operation and the sale of electricity, heat, and gas. The company's stated long-term goal is to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations by 2040.

The completion of turbine installation at He Dreiht marks one of the final construction phases before the wind farm begins delivering power to the grid. Once fully commissioned, it will represent a substantial addition to Germany's offshore wind capacity and a key asset in EnBW's renewable energy portfolio.
