EGAT Presents Natural Gas-LNG-Renewable Energy Integration Strategy for Net Zero at Gastech 2025
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) showcased its comprehensive approach to achieving Net Zero Emissions through the integration of natural gas, liquid natural gas (LNG), and renewable energy technologies at Gastech 2025. The presentation highlighted how transitional fuels will ensure power security during Thailand's energy transformation while supporting the expansion of clean energy infrastructure.
Natural Gas as Transitional Fuel Strategy
Mrs. Khalayakorn Suzuki, Director of Fuel Sourcing and Contract Management Division at EGAT, revealed at the Gastech Exhibition and Conference 2025 that natural gas and liquid natural gas are essential components for Thailand in achieving Net Zero Emissions goals. These fuels serve as transitional energy sources designed to displace coal and oil while ensuring a stable power supply and supporting the expansion of intermittent renewable energy sources.
Natural gas functions as a primary fuel during the transition period for maintaining power system balance. The existing natural gas network infrastructure will enable the adoption of future fuels, including hydrogen, leveraging current distribution systems for emerging energy technologies.
Clean Energy Technology Development Programs
EGAT is accelerating the development of multiple clean energy technologies as part of its comprehensive approach to energy transition. The organization has outlined four key technological development areas that comprise its clean energy portfolio. The first component involves a 45 MW pilot floating solar project that is integrated with a 36 MW hydropower plant.
This initiative represents part of a larger capacity expansion plan targeting 2,725 MW within the next 10 years, demonstrating EGAT's commitment to scaling renewable energy infrastructure. Pumped-storage hydropower technology forms the second pillar of EGAT's clean energy development strategy. This technology stores electricity and supplies it during peak demand periods, providing grid stability and energy security during periods of high consumption.
The third area focuses on hydrogen and future technologies, including hydrogen co-firing, ammonia applications, and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) systems. These technologies represent advanced solutions for reducing carbon emissions while maintaining energy reliability.

Smart Grid Infrastructure Implementation
EGAT's fourth technological development area encompasses Smart Grid network systems designed to optimize energy distribution and management. The smart grid infrastructure includes the Renewable Energy Forecast Center, Smart Grid systems, and Virtual Power Plant technologies. These smart grid components aim to enhance the integration of renewable energy sources while maintaining grid stability and reliability.
The systems provide advanced monitoring and management capabilities for distributed energy resources and renewable energy forecasting.
Thailand's Role in Regional Energy Development
Thailand will serve as the host country for Gastech 2026, an international exhibition and conference that drives regional and global development of energy industries. This hosting opportunity marks a significant milestone for supporting investment and innovation to foster a secure and sustainable energy future. Gastech 2026 will highlight Thailand's intentions to transform its energy structure and develop clean energy capabilities.
The event is positioned to contribute to boosting the economy and raising the quality of life through energy sector development and innovation. The international conference is scheduled to take place on September 15-18, 2026, at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre. This four-day event will bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and technology developers to advance energy sector collaboration and development initiatives.
EGAT's comprehensive strategy demonstrates the organization's commitment to balancing energy security with environmental objectives. The integration of transitional fuels with renewable energy technologies and advanced grid infrastructure represents a systematic approach to achieving Net Zero Emissions while maintaining reliable power supply for Thailand's economic and social development needs.
The clean energy transition efforts align with EGAT's primary mission of enhancing energy security while advancing environmental sustainability goals. The combination of immediate transitional solutions and long-term renewable energy investments provides a framework for managing the complexities of energy system transformation.
