Data center and energy firms have pledged to invest $90 billion in the US state of Pennsylvania to help build out its digital infrastructure following a summit attended by President Donald Trump. This investment aims to build a new AI-driven economy that leverages the state's strengths in technology and energy. The investments were announced at the inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit at Carnegie Mellon University.
Investment Plans
Google has signed a USD 3 billion agreement with Brookfield Asset Management to purchase electricity from two hydropower facilities in Pennsylvania. The company also plans to invest USD 25 billion in data centers across Pennsylvania and nearby states over the next two years. Meanwhile, Blackstone plans to invest USD 25 billion in data centers and energy infrastructure across Pennsylvania and has announced a new joint venture with PPL Corp focused on power generation.
Energy Infrastructure
FirstEnergy will invest USD 15 billion to upgrade power distribution, strengthen grid infrastructure, and manage the upgraded grid across 56 counties in Pennsylvania. Meta Platforms has also announced plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in building large-scale AI data centers, including a multi-gigawatt facility named Prometheus, which is slated for development in Ohio.
Frontier Group revealed plans to transform the former Bruce Mansfield coal power plant into a natural gas power station in Shippingport, Pennsylvania, at a cost of USD 3.4 billion. This project is expected to create 15,000 construction jobs and over 300 permanent jobs.
Enbridge will invest USD 1 billion to expand its gas pipelines into Pennsylvania, with projects to be announced over the next six to 18 months. Meanwhile, Equinor will boost natural gas production at its Pennsylvania facilities and explore opportunities to link gas to flexible power generation for data centers. It said this will cost USD 1.6 billion.
