Yorkshire Solar and Battery Project Approved to Power 7,400 Homes
A new renewable energy project in North Yorkshire has received official approval, paving the way for the development of a 23.5 megawatt (MW) solar farm and a 19 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) near East Heslerton. The scheme, put forward by UK developer Renewable Connections, is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 7,400 homes in its first year of operation.
Large-Scale Solar and Storage Scheme
The Carr House project will be constructed on an 88.8-hectare site north of East Heslerton and Sherburn, adjacent to the River Derwent. Alongside the solar array, the project includes a battery storage system designed to support the local grid by storing excess electricity for use during peak demand.
North Yorkshire Council approved the development under delegated powers on 6 June 2025, following a consultation process that involved both community members and statutory bodies.
Michael Hughes, CEO of Renewable Connections, welcomed the decision, stating, “This project represents a significant contribution to local energy resilience and supports national goals for reducing carbon emissions.”
The development also includes measures to enhance local biodiversity. According to project documentation, the site is expected to deliver a 16% increase in habitat units, a 55% increase in hedgerow units, and a 7% improvement in watercourse units figures that exceed statutory biodiversity net gain requirements.
These enhancements aim to ensure the project not only contributes to the UK’s renewable energy targets but also improves the ecological value of the surrounding landscape.
Next Steps
With planning consent secured, Renewable Connections will move forward with construction planning and implementation. The timeline for breaking ground has not yet been confirmed, but the company indicates that the project will form a key part of its expanding renewable energy portfolio.
The Carr House project highlights ongoing efforts to diversify the UK’s energy supply and strengthen grid reliability while integrating sustainability and biodiversity at the local level.
