Canadian Solar Subsidiary Secures 2.5 GWh Battery Storage Deal with Major U.S. Utility

Updated on Mar 18, 2026, 02:43 PM IST

Canadian Solar subsidiary E-storage has secured a supply agreement for a 500 MW/2,493 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project with a major U.S. utility. The project is designed to support data center grid infrastructure and resiliency, with shipments expected to begin in March 2027.

The utility involved in the deal has not been disclosed by Canadian Solar. E-storage will supply approximately 500 of its SolBank 3.0 containers as part of the agreement, with the BESS system to be manufactured through Canadian Solar's global manufacturing network.

Project Timeline and Specifications

Shipments for the 500 MW/2,493 MWh BESS project are scheduled to start in March 2027 and be completed by July 2027. The system will utilize E-storage's SolBank 3.0 container technology, with approximately 500 units required for the full deployment.

The battery energy storage system is specifically intended to support data center grid infrastructure, addressing the growing power demands from rapid data center expansion. Canadian Solar's announcement emphasized that the supply will be supporting data center grid infrastructure and resiliency.

Company Leadership Response

Colin Parker, president of Canadian Solar and E-storage, expressed the company's commitment to supporting grid infrastructure amid increasing power demands. Parker stated that the company was "honored to support the grid" as rapid data center growth drives power needs.

"With our SolBank platform and proven delivery capabilities, we are well-positioned to provide dependable, on-time solutions that help utilities and developers keep pace with this new phase of power system growth," Parker said in the announcement.

Recent Business Activities

The new supply deal follows closely after E-storage and clean energy developer Sunraycer announced agreements in February for the supply and long-term servicing of two standalone BESS projects. These Texas-based projects total 503 MWh capacity and are located in Franklin County.

Construction on the first of the two Franklin County projects is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026. The February agreements include both supply and long-term servicing components for the battery energy storage systems.

ESS News has approached Canadian Solar and E-storage for confirmation of the utility involved in the latest deal, though the company has not disclosed this information in its current announcement. The manufacturing will be handled through Canadian Solar's established global manufacturing network, according to the company's press release.
