The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has committed CAD 108.3 million to the Mesgi’g Ugju’s’n 2 (MU2) wind farm in Quebec, marking its inaugural Indigenous equity loan. This 102.2 MW expansion of the existing MU1 facility is a joint venture between the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation (MMBC) and Innergex Renewable Energy.

MU2 will feature 19 Nordex turbines and is projected to supply electricity to approximately 20,000 homes, reducing annual emissions by about 153,053 tonnes. A 30-year, inflation-indexed power purchase agreement with Hydro-Québec ensures long-term revenue stability for the project.

CIB's investment comprises a CAD 15.8 million equity loan to enhance MMBC’s economic participation and CAD 92.5 million allocated for construction costs. Additional financial backing includes a CAD 163.9 million green loan from CIBC, Desjardins, and the National Bank of Canada.

Community Impact

The project is expected to create 150 direct jobs during construction, with a commitment to hire at least 30% of workers from nearby Mi’gmaq communities. Profits generated will be reinvested into local initiatives, supporting the economic development of the region .

Strategic Significance

MU2 represents a significant step in Canada's clean energy transition, demonstrating the viability of Indigenous-led renewable energy projects. Scheduled for completion in late 2026, the wind farm will contribute to both regional energy needs and broader environmental goals.
