Búzios Oil Field Surpasses Record Production of 900,000 Barrels Per Day

Updated on Aug 19, 2025, 04:00 AM IST

Brazil's Búzios oil field, operated by Petrobras, has broken its production record by surpassing 900,000 barrels of oil per day over the weekend. This milestone brings the field closer to matching the production levels of the Tupi field, also located in the Santos Basin, and positions Búzios to potentially become Brazil's largest oil producer by 2025.

Field Overview and Location

The Búzios field is located in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, approximately 180 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Discovered by Petrobras in 2010, the field began operations in 2018. The field is currently the largest in Brazil in terms of reserves and ranks second in production volume.

Búzios houses the country's most productive wells, situated at depths exceeding 2,000 meters below the seabed. The reservoir's thickness equals the height of Sugarloaf Mountain, while its extension covers more than twice the area of Guanabara Bay.

Production Infrastructure and Recent Developments

The field operates with six production units: platforms P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77, and the FPSOs Almirante Barroso and Almirante Tamandaré. The recent production milestone was achieved with the activation of the fifth well of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré.

According to Petrobras President Magda Chambriard, the company placed more wells into production during the first half of this year than in the entire previous year.

These wells, including those at Búzios, have delivered significant results that enabled the company to reach this new production record. A new production unit, the P-78 platform, is currently en route to Brazil and will soon begin operations at the Búzios field, as announced by Sylvia Anjos, Petrobras' Director of Exploration and Production.

Strategic Impact and Operational Excellence

Chambriard emphasized that each record achieved reinforces the effectiveness of the company's adopted strategies. The company's personnel have been working to simultaneously increase production and reduce costs through project simplification initiatives and supplier diversification, resulting in more efficient oil and gas projects.

The company is implementing these production increases while maintaining its commitment to emission reductions and supporting a fair energy transition. The magnitude of the Búzios field, described as a giant whose extension corresponds to twice the area of Guanabara Bay, enabled the company to surpass this exceptional production threshold.

Partnership Structure

The Búzios field is operated by Petrobras in partnership with CNOOC, CNPC, and PPSA. This partnership structure supports the ongoing development and expansion of production capabilities at one of Brazil's most significant oil reserves. The achievement of surpassing 900,000 barrels per day represents a significant milestone in Brazil's oil production capacity and demonstrates the continued potential of the pre-salt reserves in the Santos Basin.
