Buchan Offshore Wind has submitted an onshore planning application to Aberdeenshire Council for the onshore infrastructure required to connect their multi-billion-pound energy project to the electricity grid. The application was submitted on October 8, 2025, and provides detailed plans for the electrical infrastructure needed to connect the offshore wind project to Scotland's transmission network.

Project Overview and Location

Buchan Offshore Wind is developing a floating offshore wind farm located 75 km northeast of Fraserburgh on the Aberdeenshire coast. The project has a capacity of nearly 1 GW and is scheduled for connection in 2033. The development is anticipated to spark significant investment in Scotland's ports and bring long-term jobs to Aberdeenshire and the Highlands during construction later this decade.

The onshore infrastructure detailed in the application will connect the offshore wind project to the existing transmission network at Peterhead substation. The works include a cable landfall on the Aberdeenshire coast at Rattray Head and an underground cable route extending approximately 20 km south to the project substation on a site close to the existing Peterhead Substation.

Community Engagement and Environmental Considerations

Project Director Clare Lavelle emphasized the extensive community consultation process undertaken by the development team. Over the past three years, the project team has hosted nine public events, engaging with residents across Aberdeenshire and the Buchan coast, as well as meeting with businesses and organizations across the region.“These events have provided vital opportunities for local people to contribute to the project's development, ensuring that the project can reflect regional priorities,” Lavelle stated.

The project team has conducted detailed assessments to identify and address environmental constraints associated with locating the landfall and cable routes, while also incorporating feedback from local communities. The cables to the substation will all be underground, and once installed, the land will be reinstated. Lavelle described the project as “a world-leading floating offshore windfarm with the potential to be a cornerstone for large-scale manufacturing in Scotland, supporting thousands of new jobs, and driving progress towards the UK and Scotland's offshore wind targets.”

Economic Impact and Employment Projections

The project is estimated to generate substantial economic benefits for Scotland. More than £900 million is projected to be invested in Scotland's manufacturing sector and supply chain through the project's development. Employment projections indicate approximately 2,900 jobs in Scotland at the peak of construction and nearly 300 ongoing jobs during operation.

The onshore connection is described as a vital component that will enable the project to export clean electricity sufficient to power around a million homes. The development offers significant opportunities to the existing supply chain in north-east Scotland, including the region's ports and harbours, which will play a key role in construction and maintain a long-term presence in the operation and maintenance of the project.

Technical Infrastructure and Manufacturing Partnerships

The project has identified BW Ideol's patented Damping Pool floating substructure as its preferred foundation option. BW Ideol is working actively to establish a manufacturing center at the Ardersier Energy Transition Facility, which is being developed at the former oil and gas fabrication yard on the Moray Firth. Earlier in 2025, the Buchan project submitted its offshore consent application to Scottish Ministers. Lavelle emphasized that “securing timely offshore and onshore consents is critical to unlocking the significant inward investment this ambitious project will generate.”
