bp Starts Up Atlantis Expansion Project in Gulf of America, Adding 10,000 Barrels Per Day Ahead of Schedule

bp (integrated oil and gas company) has brought its Atlantis Major Facility Expansion project online in the Gulf of America, the company announced on July 30, 2026, delivering the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

The expansion adds approximately 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of gross peak annualized average production to one of the company's longest-running deepwater assets, with around 5,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day net to bp.

A Two-Decade Asset Gets New Life

The Atlantis field, discovered in 1998 and located approximately 150 miles south of New Orleans, has been in production for nearly 20 years. The platform operates in 7,074 feet of water and has long been one of bp's flagship offshore assets in the United States. bp serves as the operator of Atlantis with a 56% working interest, while co-owner Woodside Energy holds the remaining 44%.

The expansion project adds two new subsea water injection wells designed to increase pressure in targeted reservoirs, a method intended to unlock additional hydrocarbons that would otherwise remain inaccessible and to extend the producing life of the existing asset.

Along with the new injection wells, the project includes new subsea trees and new water injection pumps installed on the topsides of the Atlantis platform. The infrastructure additions also enable future water injection capability at the platform, positioning the asset for potential further development down the line.

Maximizing Existing Infrastructure

Andy Krieger, bp's senior vice president for the Gulf of America and Canada, framed the project as an example of extracting remaining value from established infrastructure rather than relying solely on greenfield development.

"Atlantis has been one of the anchors of our Gulf business for nearly two decades, and this expansion proves there is still more value to be generated," Krieger said.

"We're extending the life of a great asset while supporting jobs and investment in the region, all while making the most of infrastructure that's already in place."

The approach of leveraging existing platforms and subsea systems to add incremental production is a familiar strategy in the deepwater Gulf, where the substantial fixed costs of platform construction and installation make additional tiebacks and well interventions economically attractive relative to standalone developments.

Delivery Performance

bp highlighted that the Atlantis Major Facility Expansion was completed both ahead of its scheduled timeline and within a budget that came in below initial projections. The company did not disclose the specific capital expenditure figure for the project or detail how far ahead of schedule it was delivered.

The on-time and under-budget delivery comes as bp has faced broader pressure to demonstrate capital discipline across its portfolio. The Atlantis expansion, as an incremental brownfield project rather than a large new-build development, represents a lower-risk profile than the major new platform projects the company is simultaneously pursuing elsewhere in the Gulf.

Kaskida and Tiber on the Horizon

The Atlantis startup was announced alongside a reminder of bp's larger-scale Gulf of America ambitions. The company recently sanctioned two new production platforms, Kaskida and Tiber, which together are expected to add 160,000 barrels per day of new oil production capacity in the US offshore region by the end of 2030.

Neither of those projects is yet producing, and bp provided no update on their construction or development status beyond the previously stated capacity and timeline figures.

The combination of the Atlantis expansion and the sanctioning of Kaskida and Tiber reflects bp's stated strategy of sustaining and growing its deepwater Gulf of America position through a mix of brownfield optimization and major new developments.

bp's Gulf of America Footprint

bp currently operates five production platforms in the deepwater Gulf of America: Argos, Atlantis, Mad Dog, Na Kika, and Thunder Horse. The Atlantis platform now joins those assets with a refreshed production profile following the completion of the expansion work.

The Gulf of America has remained a core part of bp's upstream portfolio, and the company describes itself as a leading producer in the deepwater portion of the basin.

The region offers bp access to large, long-lived reservoirs with established logistics and regulatory frameworks, making it a continued area of investment even as the company navigates its broader energy transition commitments.

With the Atlantis expansion now online, bp will be looking to sustain production at the field while turning its attention to the more capital-intensive work of bringing Kaskida and Tiber into production before the close of the decade.

Powering North American Energy Intelligence: Track Every Oil & Gas Project Across the United States

When billions of dollars in oil and gas investment are moving across the United States at any given moment, missing a critical project update is not just an inconvenience; it is a competitive liability. The question is not whether you need better project intelligence, but whether your current tools are fast enough to keep pace with the market.

The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research was built to close that gap. Covering upstream exploration, midstream pipeline developments, downstream refining expansions, and everything in between, the platform gives energy professionals a single source of truth for oil and gas activity across the United States and beyond.

Whether you are a contractor positioning for new work, an equipment supplier identifying procurement windows, or an investor assessing market exposure, the GPT platform delivers the structured, timely data your strategy depends on.
