Bouygues Construction Wins $1.38 Billion Contract Extension to Deliver AirTrunk's 400 MW SYD3 Data Center Campus in Australia

Bouygues Construction (a construction and engineering company) has secured a USD 1.38 billion contract through its Australian subsidiary A W Edwards to continue building AirTrunk's SYD3 hyperscale data center campus in Western Sydney, marking one of the most significant data center construction awards in Australia's history.

 

The expanded contract covers delivery of the 400-plus megawatt campus, with works scheduled to commence in July 2026 and completion anticipated by mid-2028.

A Deepening Partnership at Scale

The contract represents an expansion of an existing relationship between A W Edwards and AirTrunk, with AirTrunk's Chief Development Officer Paul Slaven describing the continued engagement as a reflection of the strength of partnerships required to deliver infrastructure of this complexity.

 

The SYD3 campus sits within a broader investment strategy by AirTrunk across Australia, with the company having already committed more than USD 7.34 billion across four sites in the country. AirTrunk has indicated it expects to invest a further USD 55 billion in Australia over the next decade.

Philippe Jouy, Deputy CEO of Bouygues Construction with responsibility for Bouygues Bâtiment International, said the expansion reflects AirTrunk's confidence in the capabilities of local teams combined with Bouygues Construction's global expertise in delivering complex hyperscale facilities. He pointed to the company's deep-rooted presence in Australia through A W Edwards as a key factor underpinning the partnership.

 

Scale of Employment and Economic Impact

The SYD3 expansion is expected to bring the total number of jobs supported by the project to 10,000 throughout the construction phase. The project will create roles spanning electrical, mechanical and civil trades, engineering, project management, logistics and safety specialist positions.

 

Bouygues Construction said A W Edwards and AirTrunk will continue to invest in workforce capability, apprenticeships and industry development as part of the project's broader commitments.

Slaven said AirTrunk is committed to ongoing, long-term investment in Western Sydney and the local community. He noted that the investment would deliver jobs, create opportunities for local businesses and the supply chain, and support positive outcomes for local charitable organisations through dedicated social impact and community programme partnerships.

Infrastructure Purpose and Digital Demand

The SYD3 development is intended to strengthen Australia's digital infrastructure capacity by providing additional secure data storage and processing capability. Bouygues Construction said the facility is designed to meet growing demand from cloud computing, artificial intelligence and enterprise digital services.

Slaven acknowledged that Australia's demand for digital infrastructure continues to grow as cloud and artificial intelligence become increasingly important to the economy. He said delivering essential infrastructure of this kind requires strong partnerships across the construction and supply chain.

Environmental and Circular Economy Commitments

The project carries a set of environmental commitments that Bouygues Construction says will run throughout the construction phase. The build will use low-carbon concrete and 100 percent Australian-made steel reinforcement, with at least 86 percent of that reinforcement manufactured from recycled content, whether precast or in-situ.

The project has also implemented Site Cycle, described by Bouygues Construction as a circular economy solution that recovers, tracks and repurposes construction waste.

 

The system provides real-time waste tracking and works with manufacturers and recycling companies to transform recovered materials into new construction products for reuse. The stated target is to divert 90 percent of non-hazardous construction waste from landfill.

A W Edwards operates in New South Wales and has delivered major projects across healthcare, education, transport and digital infrastructure, including the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment and Crows Nest Metro Station in Sydney. The subsidiary serves as Bouygues Construction's primary vehicle for building delivery work in the state.
