Doral Renewables has selected Bechtel to design and build the Cold Creek Solar and Storage project in Schleicher and Tom Green counties, Texas. The facility is expected to generate approximately 430 megawatts (MW) of clean energy using more than 850,000 solar modules.

The Cold Creek project will feature a 340 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system to capture and store excess energy generated during the day and deliver it to the Texas electricity grid during peak consumer demand. Bechtel will provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the solar and storage facilities across the two counties, which will deliver power to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid.

Project Timeline and Employment Impact

Engineering is already underway, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2028. At peak construction, the Cold Creek project is expected to create more than 500 jobs, offering training opportunities and stimulating economic activity that will benefit the regional economy and surrounding communities.

Company Partnership and Portfolio Expansion

Cold Creek represents Bechtel's second project with Doral Renewables and its fifth utility-scale solar facility in Texas. Bechtel is currently building three key phases of the Mammoth Solar program in Indiana for Doral Renewables, demonstrating the ongoing partnership between the two companies.

Scott Austin, Bechtel General Manager of Renewables & Clean Power, stated that the Cold Creek project highlights the power of an all-of-the-above energy strategy. He noted that Texas continues to lead the nation in blending traditional and renewable resources to strengthen its grid, and that by combining 430 MW of solar generation with 340 MWh of storage, Cold Creek will make the Texas grid stronger and more reliable for years to come.

Jason Van Deusen, Doral Renewables VP of Project Management, described the Cold Creek project as a major milestone for the company's growth. He expressed enthusiasm about extending the partnership with Bechtel, citing the strong relationship forged through collaboration, transparency, and shared values of community engagement, local workforce participation, safety, quality, and environmental stewardship.
