Banca Transilvania (commercial bank) has agreed to finance the development of the Eco Sun Niculești solar photovoltaic park with USD 82.31 million, marking the first renewable energy production investment in Romania by Turkish energy company Entek Elektrik. The total value of the project is estimated at approximately USD 115.28 million.

A Landmark Solar Development in Dâmbovița County

The Eco Sun Niculești project is located in Dâmbovița County and is described by Banca Transilvania as one of the largest bilateral financings for a photovoltaic project currently under development in Romania.

Once completed, the park is expected to have an installed capacity of approximately 205 MWm, positioning it among the more significant solar installations in the country.

The financing was announced on 7 August 2026 and represents a continuation of what Banca Transilvania describes as a strong existing partnership with Entek Elektrik.

The bank is providing USD 82.31 million of the estimated USD 115.28 million total project cost, making it the primary financial backer of the initiative.

Entek Elektrik's Entry into Romanian Renewable Energy

The investment is being carried out through Entek Elektrik Üretimi A.Ş., a renewable energy company that forms part of the Koç Group, one of Turkey's largest industrial conglomerates.

The main shareholder in Entek Elektrik Üretimi A.Ş. is Türkiye Petrol Rafinerileri A.Ş., identified as Turkey's largest industrial enterprise and ranked as Europe's seventh-largest refinery company.

Entek already holds a portfolio of 550 MWm of energy capacity in Turkey and brings with it what the company describes as significant experience in the development, operation, and marketing of electricity.

The Niculești project represents the company's first step into renewable energy production on Romanian soil, although the nature of any prior commercial activities the company may have conducted in Romania outside of energy production was not specified in the announcement.

Strategic Significance for Romania's Energy Sector

Cosmin Călin, Deputy CEO for Large Corporate Clients at Banca Transilvania, commented on the financing, saying that projects of this scale contribute to strengthening energy independence and modernizing the Romanian economy.

Călin added that the bank is pleased to support Entek Elektrik's first investment in renewable energy production in Romania and to continue the partnership the two organisations have built together.

Călin also described the financing as reflecting Banca Transilvania's role as a partner in strategic investments and long-term value creation, and expressed the view that it could encourage further investments with a positive impact on the environment and local communities.

Banca Transilvania's Role in Green Energy Financing

The Eco Sun Niculești deal adds to a series of moves by Banca Transilvania into green and sustainable finance. In earlier announcements from 2026, the bank also partnered in the SME Eco-Tech programme, which is focused on the digitalisation and green transition of small and medium-sized enterprises in Romania.

The bank has been active across multiple financing categories, including its BT Asset Management arm joining the shareholding of airline Animawings and expanding insurance products through its BT Pay platform.

The financing for Eco Sun Niculești stands out, however, as one of the larger single transactions the bank has publicly announced in recent months, and the only one tied directly to utility-scale renewable energy generation.

Project Details and Timeline

The announcement did not specify a completion date for the Eco Sun Niculești photovoltaic park, nor did it detail the construction timeline or the identity of any contractors involved in building the facility. What the announcement confirmed is that the project is currently under development, with the financing from Banca Transilvania now in place to support that process.

The installed capacity figure of approximately 205 MWm places the Niculești park in a tier of projects capable of supplying electricity to a substantial number of households and commercial consumers, though no specific generation output or offtake arrangements were disclosed in the press release.

Dâmbovița County, where the project is located, lies in the south of Romania in the historical region of Muntenia, an area that has seen growing interest from renewable energy developers in recent years given its available land and solar irradiation levels.

Koç Group's Expanding European Footprint

The Eco Sun Niculești project represents one of the more prominent direct investments by a Koç Group entity in Romania's energy infrastructure. The Koç Group, through its energy subsidiary Entek, has built a substantial renewable portfolio in Turkey across the 550 MWm of capacity it currently operates there.

The move into Romania signals an interest in expanding that footprint into European Union energy markets, though Entek or Koç Group representatives did not provide additional commentary in the Banca Transilvania announcement beyond the structural details of the investment vehicle used.

Powering Smarter Decisions Across Romania's Energy Landscape

Every major shift in Romania's power sector begins long before a turbine spins or a cable is laid; it begins with intelligence. If your team is still relying on fragmented sources to track energy infrastructure developments, you may already be a step behind the competition.

The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research was built to give power sector professionals a single, authoritative source for project intelligence across Romania. From offshore wind corridors to grid modernisation programmes in Romania, the platform delivers structured, timely data that informs smarter planning, procurement, and investment decisions.

Whether you are a developer, contractor, financier, or equipment supplier, staying ahead of the pipeline means knowing where opportunities are forming, not just where they have already landed. The GPT platform gives you that visibility at every stage of a project's lifecycle.
