Axpo and Energix have signed an agreement to optimize Poland's largest battery energy storage system (BESS), marking another contract signed by Axpo in Poland this year. Under the agreement, Axpo is responsible for full revenue optimization of the energy storage facility.
Facility Specifications and Location
The battery energy storage system is located in Nowe Czarnowo, West Pomerania, with a capacity of 24 MW and 56 MWh. The facility is currently undergoing commissioning and prequalification for the balancing market. Once a license is obtained, scheduled for January 2026, it will set a new benchmark for energy storage in Poland, supporting the country's transition to a more flexible and resilient power grid.
The Nowe Czarnowo energy storage facility was strategically built near the Krajnik power station, where Energix's wind and photovoltaic farms, already in Axpo's portfolio, also operate. All energy installations in the area require comprehensive management, including optimization of connection costs to the national transmission grid, which is owned and operated by PSE.
Commercial and Technical Support Services
Axpo will provide full commercial and technical-regulatory support to the BESS, integrating it with the wholesale and balancing markets and associated ancillary services. The BESS contract includes a percentage split of profits generated by the storage facility between both parties.
The agreement covers needs that are essential from the perspective of an energy storage investor, such as handling of the capacity obligation and the prequalification to ancillary services market. Axpo's services are designed to rapidly bring new services to market that stabilize the grid and increase the profitability of renewable projects, while also fully accounting for local regulations and market conditions.

Existing Partnership Between Companies
Axpo and Energix maintain a long-standing partnership that includes seven renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs) covering 300 MW of wind and 40 MW of photovoltaic capacity. This battery storage optimization contract represents an expansion of their existing business relationship.
Mateusz Marczewski, Managing Director of Axpo in Poland, stated that Axpo is among the first companies in Poland to develop comprehensive contractual and commercial solutions for the optimization of battery energy storage systems. He expressed satisfaction that Energix is among the first partners for whom they are optimizing a BESS in Poland, describing the utilization of the facility's potential as an important step in expanding their offering to provide flexibility to grid operators.
Strategic Expansion Plans
Energix Polska CEO Artur Violante described Axpo as a proven and reliable partner that combines international know-how with local experience. He indicated that this partnership helps diversify revenues from their wind and solar farms and introduces further innovations. Violante characterized the Nowe Czarnowo storage facility as just the beginning, stating that the development of energy storage solutions is a key pillar of Energix's expansion strategy in Poland and globally.
Axpo has been active in the development, construction, and commercial optimization of large-scale battery systems in Switzerland and Europe for several years and continues to expand its battery storage business internationally. The company has developed flexible solutions that can accommodate local market conditions and regulatory requirements in different countries.
