Amazon Web Services held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new data center in Hyderabad, marking the expansion of the AWS Asia Pacific Hyderabad Region, with the event attended by Telangana Chief Minister Shri A. Revanth Reddy.

The ceremony signals a deepening financial commitment by Amazon to India's cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure, forming part of a broader USD 48 billion investment across the company's Indian businesses announced by CEO Andy Jassy.

A Multibillion-Dollar Infrastructure Push

Amazon has outlined plans to invest over USD 21 billion into cloud infrastructure in India between 2026 and 2030, positioning itself as one of the largest global investors in AI and cloud infrastructure in the country.

The figure forms a significant portion of the USD 48 billion total planned investment across Amazon's Indian operations, which Jassy announced following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

By the end of 2025, Amazon had already invested more than USD 1.3 billion in cloud infrastructure within the AWS Asia Pacific Hyderabad Region since it launched in 2022.

The new groundbreaking at the Bharat Future City site in Hyderabad represents the next stage of that build-out, with planned expansion also extending to Mumbai.

The investment is intended to expand India's data center facility projects, giving startups, enterprises and government organisations access to custom AI chips, cloud and managed AI services, secure cloud technologies and developer tools.

Government Backing and Strategic Location

The groundbreaking drew participation from senior state officials, reflecting the close relationship between Amazon and the Telangana government. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy described the foundation stone laying as a stepping stone for broader investment into Bharat Future City, a development he characterised as a world-class city with best-in-class infrastructure.

Telangana's Minister for Information Technology and Industries, Shri D. Sridhar Babu, framed the expansion in terms of the state's ambition to become India's AI and cloud capital.

He cited progressive policies, reliable infrastructure, abundant clean energy, world-class talent, and ease of doing business as factors drawing global-scale investment to Hyderabad. Sridhar Babu said the city was increasingly powering global innovation, not just serving India's domestic digital economy.

Anurag Khilnani, AWS Director of Data Center Delivery, credited the Telangana state government's support as essential to fast-tracking construction of what he described as India's digital backbone in Hyderabad. Khilnani said Amazon would continue to invest in the state's local data center supply chain, workforce, and community.

Workforce Development at the Center of the Strategy

Alongside the infrastructure investment, Amazon is running structured skilling programmes designed to create a local talent pipeline specifically for data center operations.

The Amazon Data Center Skilling Program, now in its fourth year in India, was developed in partnership with the AWS Data Center Operations team and provides both theoretical and hands-on training in Critical Facilities Operations Management and Critical Compute Operations.

The programme operates in Hyderabad through Vardhaman Engineering College in Shamshabad, Telangana. The fourth cohort, consisting of 51 students, recently graduated, bringing the total number of candidates trained in Hyderabad under the programme to 250. Of those 250 graduates, Amazon has hired 110 directly into the AWS Data Center Operations team.

The skilling programme sits within a much larger workforce development effort by AWS across India. Since 2017, AWS has trained more than 10 million individuals in India in cloud skills through programmes including AWS Skill Builder, AWS Educate and AWS re/Start. The company describes these initiatives as providing cloud computing skills training to individuals from diverse backgrounds seeking careers in technology.

Meeting the Demands of Digital India and the India AI Mission

Amazon has framed its Hyderabad expansion explicitly in terms of the Indian government's Digital India initiative and the India AI Mission. Khilnani stated that since the AWS Hyderabad Region launched in 2022, the company has worked to build sustainable cloud data center operations in Telangana to help meet the growing demands of both programmes.

The expanded data center footprint is intended to strengthen India's data center market and provide Indian organisations with the infrastructure necessary to adopt AI and cloud technologies at scale.

The access to custom AI chips and managed AI services that the new capacity will enable is positioned as critical infrastructure for startups looking to scale, enterprises undergoing digital transformation, and government bodies seeking reliable and secure cloud capabilities.

Sridhar Babu described data centers as the foundational infrastructure of the digital economy in an era when AI is transforming every sector, reinforcing the Telangana government's view that attracting this class of investment is central to the state's long-term economic strategy.
