Avangrid (a leading sustainable energy company) has executed a new Power Purchase Agreement with Microsoft (global technology company) for the 140 megawatt-dc Bluebird Solar project in Klickitat County, Washington, pushing the total energy capacity under contract between the two companies past 500 megawatts in the United States.
A Fourth Contract Deepens a Growing Partnership
The announced agreement marks the fourth PPA that Avangrid and Microsoft have executed in the United States. The two companies previously contracted for Powell Creek Solar in Ohio and Camino Solar in California, both of which reached commercial operation in 2025, as well as Juniper Canyon Wind in Washington, which is expected to begin commercial operation this year. With the addition of Bluebird, the combined U.S. portfolio now exceeds 500 megawatts of energy capacity under contract.
Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda said the project builds on the company's longstanding commitment to energy development and operations in Washington.
"We are proud to have built a strong relationship with Microsoft to help them meet their energy needs while investing in the communities where we operate," Miranda said in the announcement. "This adds to Avangrid's strong track record of developing projects to help meet growing energy demands from the world's leading technology companies."
Project Specifications and Location
Bluebird Solar has a rated capacity of 140 megawatts on a direct current basis, equivalent to 100 megawatts on an alternating current basis. Avangrid states the project will be capable of powering more than 20,000 U.S. homes.
The project is situated near four other energy projects already owned and operated by Avangrid in Klickitat County, consolidating the company's presence in that region of Washington state.
The project's name draws directly from the local environment. The area is home to thousands of bluebirds, and the nearby town of Bickleton is known as the Bluebird Capital of the World, according to Avangrid. Commercial operation is targeted for 2028.

Economic Impact for Klickitat County
Avangrid projects that construction of Bluebird Solar will create approximately 300 jobs, with the majority expected to be filled by local union labor. Long-term operations and maintenance work is also expected to support several permanent positions in the community once the facility is operational.
Over its lifetime, Avangrid estimates that Bluebird will contribute approximately USD 11 million in local property taxes, which the company says will support public services in the region. The project represents a roughly USD 300 million investment in Klickitat County, according to Avangrid.
Avangrid's Broader U.S. Portfolio
Avangrid operates more than 11 gigawatts of installed capacity across a portfolio that spans 25 states and includes nearly 100 energy projects. The company's power generation business owns and operates more than 80 energy generation facilities across the United States, producing more than 10.5 gigawatts of power for over 3.1 million customers.
Through its network business, Avangrid owns and operates seven electric and natural gas utilities serving more than 3.4 million customers in New York and New England.
The company holds approximately $48 billion in assets and employs approximately 8,000 people. Avangrid is a subsidiary of Iberdrola, S.A., the Spain-based global energy company that supplies energy to almost 100 million people across dozens of countries and holds assets in excess of 141.7 billion euros.
Avangrid was recognized by JUST Capital as one of the JUST 100 companies in 2025 for the fifth consecutive year and was named among the World's Most Ethical Companies in 2025 for the seventh consecutive year by the Ethisphere Institute.
Iberdrola's Wider Renewables Push
The Bluebird Solar agreement fits within the broader strategic direction of Iberdrola, which describes itself as a leader in renewable energy and has invested more than USD 150.81 billion over the past two decades toward building what it calls a sustainable energy model.
Iberdrola's main markets include Europe, the United States, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia, with additional presence in markets including Japan, Taiwan, Ireland, Sweden, and Poland. The group employs nearly 40,000 people and supports 400,000 jobs across its supply chain, with annual procurement of USD 14.15 billion.
