The Australian government has opened an Expression Of Interest (EOI) for its USD 2 billion program to accelerate the country’s hydrogen Industry. The EOI was opened on October 10th and the last date of submission is November 10th. In May 2023 the Australian government announced that it would invest up to USD 2 billion to fund large-scale hydrogen production projects.
Subsequently, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) in partnership with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (DCCEEW) undertook a design and consultation process for the program. The consultation period was closed in August 2023.
The program will ensure ARENA’s commitment of over USD 308 million to 46 renewable energy projects since 2017.“As other countries set up their ambitions, Australia’s hydrogen energy program will be transformative. With abundant renewable energy sources we’re well placed to be a global leader in the hydrogen industry” said Darren Miller, CEO of Arena said.
The main objective of this program is to produce renewable energy hydrogen ar a large scale in Australia, facilitating an accelerated pathway to the commercial viability of renewable hydrogen production and use. The project will support domestic decarbonization and provide economic opportunities in our manufacturing and export industries. Another key objective is to reduce barriers to future deployments through developing construction expertise. Apart from this, The program will help build domestic production capabilities enhancing Australia's capabilities in the hydrogen energy sector.
The funding for the program is provided in the form of a grant. The grant will be given in the form of a Production Credit paid per unit of hydrogen. The grant will be paid quarterly. The project doesn't have a minimum or maximum amount that could be applied for. The project funding will be granted based on the merits of the applications submitted. The five major merit criteria while considering the applications include Contribution to the program objectives, Applicant capability, Project design, financial viability, and knowledge sharing.
