The Australian government has approved feasibility licenses for six offshore wind projects in Australia. These projects are vying for a place in Australia's first offshore wind zone, located in the waters off Gippsland in Victoria's east. The six projects that have been granted feasibility licenses include High Sea Wind, Gippsland Skies, Blue Mackerel North, Kut-Wut Brataualung, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1, and Star of the South Wind Farm. These projects were selected after a competitive application process last year.
The feasibility licenses will allow these developers to undertake detailed environmental assessments, geotechnical surveys, and obtain necessary approvals. They will also be able to conduct further consultations on their proposed projects. This is a crucial step towards realizing Australia's first offshore wind zone.
The Government is planning to execute around 12 offshore wind projects in this zone. Further details of the projects are given below:

A total of 37 applications were received for the 15,000 square kilometer zone off Gippsland. The government had initially sought 600 megawatts of new dispatchable capacity, but the bids received were for a staggering 19,000 megawatts, 32 times more than what was requested.
If feasibility is proven, developers can then apply for a commercial license to build the offshore wind project to generate electricity commercially.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said offshore wind projects in Australia present a huge opportunity for the regions that have powered our country for generations. “These offshore wind projects will also support thousands of jobs in Gippsland and across the supply chain, opening up new opportunities for skill development within the renewable energy industry,” he added.
