Atmos Renewables Acquires Full Ownership of 316 MW Hornsdale Wind Farm in South Australia

Updated on Aug 13, 2025, 04:00 AM IST

Atmos Renewables has agreed to acquire Neoen's majority interest in the 316 MW Hornsdale wind farm in South Australia, marking a new operational milestone for the business and reinforcing its national footprint as a long-term renewable energy operator. The acquisition represents a significant expansion of Atmos's renewable energy portfolio and operational capabilities.

Strategic Acquisition Details

Atmos held minority interests across the three stages of the project before agreeing to acquire it from Neoen to assume full ownership and control. Settlement is expected to occur in 2H25, upon completion of customary conditions precedent. The transaction will give Atmos complete control over the wind farm that has been operating since 2017.

With this acquisition and construction now underway on the Merredin BESS in Western Australia, Atmos will become the only owner-operator with renewable generation assets across all NEM and WEM-connected states. This geographic expansion demonstrates the company's growing presence in Australia's renewable energy sector.

Portfolio Milestone Achievement

The acquisition will take Atmos's internally managed portfolio above 1 GW for the first time, representing a key milestone in the continued growth of the company's operational capability. This threshold marks a significant scale achievement for the renewable energy operator.

"This is a milestone that reflects not just scale, but operational maturity. Managing more than 1 GW of clean energy assets in-house signals that we're here for the long haul and set up for further growth – with the people, systems and experience to operate responsibly and efficiently at scale," said Nigel Baker, C, Atmos Renewables.

Operational History and Energy Supply

Hornsdale has been operating since 2017, supplying the ACT government with clean energy under a long-term Feed-In Tariff. The wind farm has established a track record of reliable energy generation over its seven years of operation.

The facility's energy supply arrangement with the ACT government provides a stable revenue stream through the long-term Feed-In Tariff structure, ensuring continued clean energy delivery to government operations.

Community and Stakeholder Commitments

Atmos will take on and continue all existing community and First Nations programmes associated with the Hornsdale wind farm, maintaining strong relationships with local stakeholders. The company has committed to preserving the established community engagement initiatives that were previously managed under Neoen's ownership.

The acquisition includes support for the Canberra Institute of Technology's Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence, demonstrating ongoing commitment to educational partnerships in the renewable energy sector. Baker emphasized the company's focus on stakeholder relationships, stating, "As we grow, we remain focused on delivering energy reliably and continuing strong, respectful relationships with the communities and stakeholders who host our projects."

The transaction ensures continuity in community programs while expanding Atmos's role as a long-term renewable energy operator with assets spanning multiple Australian states. The company's commitment to maintaining existing stakeholder relationships reflects its strategy of responsible growth in the renewable energy sector.
