As the next offshore wind tender approaches New York announces a USD-86 million supply chain deal

Updated on Jan 08, 2024, 05:00 AM IST

The state of New York stated on Friday that it will publish its third offshore wind solicitation in early 2022, with the goal of attracting significant port infrastructure and supply chain investment, as well as a USD-86 million supply chain contract.

The Sunrise Wind offshore wind project's partners, Denmark's Ørsted A/S and New England utility Eversource Energy, have awarded the contract to Riggs Distler & Company Inc. Riggs Distler, a Centuri Group Inc company, will build wind turbine foundation components at the Coeymans port under the agreement.

The news backs up the state's goal of building 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind by 2035.

New York governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement, "We are going to be bold in how we achieve our climate goals and with our upcoming early 2022 offshore wind solicitation, New York will again demonstrate its national leadership in the acceleration to a green economy,"

Sunrise Wind, a 924-MW project, was chosen in New York's first offshore wind solicitation of 2018. It is anticipated to begin construction as early as 2023 and be completed by 2025.

The contract, which was announced on Friday, is the state's largest single offshore wind supply chain transaction. The agreement will result in the creation of 230 jobs. Riggs Distler will be the general contractor for the prefabricated foundation components at the port, while Ljungstrom LLC of New York will manufacture and transport the steel components.

Internal and external platforms, railings, steel ladders, cages, and other foundation components will be brought down the Hudson River to the project's location.

At a press conference in Coeymans, lieutenant governor Brian Benjamin announced the agreement.
