Arevon Energy, Inc. gathered project partners, state and local officials, labor and business leaders, and community members in Daly City to celebrate significant construction progress at its Cormorant Energy Storage Project, a 250 megawatt/1,000 megawatt-hour battery storage facility that is expected to begin commercial operations in 2027.

A Facility Built to Serve Peak Demand

The Cormorant project, located in Daly City, California, is designed to power 321,000 homes for up to four hours during periods of peak electricity demand. The facility will store electricity during periods of lower demand and dispatch it when demand is highest, with the aim of enhancing grid reliability across the state. Arevon, which is developing, owning, and operating Cormorant, is building the project in partnership with Primoris Services Corporation's Renewables group.

The project uses lithium iron phosphate battery technology, which Arevon describes as recognized for its strong safety record and long operating life. At peak construction, Cormorant is expected to employ approximately 175 workers.

Expanded Capacity and a Long-Term Offtake Agreement

Cormorant was originally planned at 188 MW/752 MWh before being expanded to its current 250 MW/1,000 MWh scale. The project is under a long-term offtake agreement with MCE, an electricity provider serving more than 1.8 million residents and businesses across Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, and Solano counties. MCE contracted for the project's additional capacity following the expansion.

Vicken Kasarjian, MCE's Acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, noted that the partnership with Arevon is intended to help Bay Area residents take advantage of abundant midday solar production.

As part of Arevon's contract with MCE, more than USD 500,000 will be distributed to fund local community programs. Arevon announced the start of construction at Cormorant in March 2026.

Projected Economic and Environmental Impact

Over its operational lifetime, Cormorant is expected to generate more than USD 73 million in property tax revenue, with those funds directed toward schools, infrastructure improvements, and public services in the area. The project is also projected to save more than 4.2 billion gallons of water and avoid 174,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Justin Johnson, Chief Executive Officer at Arevon, described Cormorant as the kind of critical energy infrastructure California needs to meet growing electricity demand.

"This event recognized the tremendous work of our construction crews and project partners who are bringing this facility to life," Johnson said. "Arevon is proud to invest in projects that store power when it is abundant, deliver it when it is needed most, and support a more reliable and affordable energy future for California."

State Regulators Highlight Battery Storage's Role in California's Grid

Molly Sterkel, a Director in the Energy Division of the California Public Utilities Commission, spoke at the celebration and connected the Cormorant project to the state's broader energy reliability goals.

The CPUC, she noted, expects over 20 gigawatts of new clean resources to come online by 2032 to meet reliability requirements, with battery storage identified as a critical part of that effort.

"The CPUC, working with our partners through the state's Tracking Energy Development Task Force, has supported this project since 2024, helping address challenges and keep it moving forward," Sterkel said. She added that battery storage is particularly valuable for providing reliability when solar generation declines and electricity demand remains high.

Local Officials Embrace Daly City's Role in California's Energy Transition

Mayor Glenn Sylvester of Daly City spoke at the event and framed the project as evidence that the city can take a leading role in building reliable, resilient infrastructure at the state level.

"Cormorant will strengthen our electric grid, create jobs, generate significant long-term revenue for public services, and help move California toward a cleaner and more sustainable future," Sylvester said.

Megan Yarnall, Development Associate at Arevon, served as master of ceremonies for the event. Other speakers included Perla Ibarrientos, Chairman of the Board at Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center, and Marya Ouro-Gbeleou, Senior Director of Client Services at the Daly City Partnership.

Community Partnerships Accompany Project Development

Arevon has maintained community engagement in Daly City and the greater Bayshore area throughout the development and construction phases of Cormorant.

Through donations, sponsorships, scholarships, memberships, and volunteer activities, the company has partnered with more than a dozen local and regional organizations.

Those partners include the Bayshore Elementary School District, Jefferson Union High School District, Daly City Partnership, Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center, Bayshore Community Center, Pacific Islands Together, and John's Closet, among others.

Mike Stancil, Executive Director at the Daly City Partnership, highlighted the range of services his organization provides, from afterschool programs to senior assistance initiatives to workforce training, and connected that work to the investment Arevon is making in the region through the Cormorant project.
