Anesco, the UK-headquartered renewable energy developer, has completed a project financing arrangement with Lombard (UK asset finance provider) covering a portfolio of three energy assets at varying stages of development, marking a significant step in the company's continued expansion across the UK market.

Three Projects, Three Stages of Development

The financing covers a geographically diverse set of assets that reflect the breadth of Anesco's current operations. The first is Woodwalton, a 21 MWp solar farm located in Cambridgeshire that is already fully operational and generating clean energy for the grid.

The second is Rothienorman, a 50MW/100MWh Battery Energy Storage System in Scotland, which is now in the final stages of construction and approaching commissioning. The third site is Coven, a 48.5MWp solar farm in Staffordshire that recently achieved financial close, enabling the next phase of its development.

Together, the three projects span both solar generation and battery storage technologies, and represent assets at operational, near-commissioning, and early development phases respectively. The arrangement with Lombard was structured to accommodate this range of project stages simultaneously, a feature that both parties highlighted as significant.

What the Financing Means for Both Parties

Anesco Chief Executive Hildagarde McCarville said the completion of the financing demonstrates the strength of the company's delivery capability, pipeline, and partner relationships.

"The successful completion of this financing across projects at different stages of their lifecycle demonstrates the strength of our delivery, our pipeline, and our partnerships," she said. "We are pleased to be working with Lombard to move forward with these projects, which will contribute to the UK's energy transition and energy security, while creating long-term value for our stakeholders."

For Lombard, the deal reinforces its positioning as a financier of renewable infrastructure. Tom Bosson, Head of Renewable Energy Lending for Lombard, described the three projects as examples of the scale and variety of infrastructure currently supporting the UK's energy transition.

"By working with experienced developers such as Anesco, we can help bring forward investment in renewable energy and storage technologies that are expected to play an important role in supporting a more resilient energy system and the UK's pathway to net-zero," Bosson said.

Anesco's Broader Portfolio and Company Profile

Anesco was founded and is headquartered in the United Kingdom and has to date safely delivered 1.3 gigawatts of solar and storage assets. The company develops, designs, constructs, maintains, operates, and optimises grid-scale renewable energy assets, and currently manages a portfolio of more than 1.3 gigawatts of assets on behalf of leading investors. Beyond the UK, Anesco has a growing presence across Northern Europe, with operations in the Netherlands, Ireland, and Belgium.

The company is a portfolio company of Ara Partners and Nature Infrastructure Capital, the latter of which made an investment in Anesco alongside Ara Partners and the Anesco management team in a deal aimed at accelerating the company's development activity.

Recent Activity and Leadership Changes at Anesco

The Lombard financing announcement follows a period of notable activity at Anesco. The company recently appointed Julian Foster as Chief Operating Officer, a role in which he is focused on delivering Anesco's growth strategy, supporting mergers and acquisitions, and developing opportunities in both new and existing markets.

Foster brings more than 30 years of experience across the infrastructure, utilities, and telecoms sectors, having previously served as COO at electric vehicle charging company GRIDSERVE, and in senior leadership positions at Upp, Affinity Water, and Heathrow Airport.

Anesco also recently acquired a 36MWp solar farm project called Beachampton from One Planet Developments. That project was developed in partnership with Viridi Re Development, Solar Ambition Europe, and the landowner Kingwell. Once operational, the Beachampton solar farm is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power a significant number of homes, though specific output figures were not detailed at the time of the announcement.

The company was also named one of the UK's leading employers in the Annual State of the Nation Report 2026, a national review produced in partnership with the Energy Institute that examines diversity, representation, and workforce inclusion across the energy sector.

Context: UK Renewable Finance and Energy Security

The Lombard deal arrives as the UK continues to push forward with its energy transition goals and seeks to build greater energy security through domestic renewable generation and storage capacity.

Battery energy storage systems such as the Rothienorman project in Scotland are increasingly viewed as a critical component of grid stability, particularly as the share of intermittent renewable generation on the network grows.

The Rothienorman BESS, with a capacity of 50MW and storage of 100MWh, forms part of a broader trend of large-scale battery projects reaching construction and commissioning phases across the UK.

Lombard's Tom Bosson noted that both solar generation and battery storage are expected to play important roles in supporting a more resilient energy system as the country moves toward its net-zero targets.
