Andhra Pradesh Minister of Information Technology Nara Lokesh laid the foundation stone for Visakhapatnam's first 50-MW AI-powered Edge Data Center and Open Cable Landing Station at Rushikonda on October 12, 2025. The facility is being established by Sify Infinit Spaces Limited, a subsidiary of Sify Technologies, as part of an INR 1,500-crore world-class infrastructure project.

Project Specifications and Infrastructure

The data center will be built on 3.6 acres of land allocated by the government to support AI-driven enterprises and digital infrastructure. The facility will be interconnected via the Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) substation and connected by at least two fiber networks. The INR 1,500-crore project will be implemented in two phases. The Cable Landing Station facility is designed to strengthen India's digital backbone by enabling seamless undersea cable connectivity and scalable AI compute capacity.

By bringing low-latency data processing closer to users in India and across the region, the CLS will serve as a strategic landing point for submarine cables, connecting India with South-East Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and Thailand.

Strategic Significance and Government Vision

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony, Minister Lokesh stated that Visakhapatnam was fast-emerging as India's global digital gateway on the eastern seaboard. “Sify's world-class infrastructure will not only strengthen our State's position in the global technology map but also catalyze new opportunities in innovation, employment, and investment,” the Minister said.

Lokesh emphasized that this development represents just the first step in the state's digital transformation plans. “This is just the first step, and approvals for a mega data center are already in place. This marks a defining moment in Andhra Pradesh's digital journey and India's path towards technological self-reliance,” he added.

Sify Chairman Raju Vegesna expressed the company's commitment to the project and its broader implications for India's digital infrastructure. “We are proud to enable Visakhapatnam's transformation into a key hub for global connectivity and digital infrastructure. This initiative is just the beginning of our long-term commitment to strengthening India's digital economy and advancing AI-led innovation at scale,” Vegesna said.

Vegesna provided additional context about Sify's broader operations, explaining that Sify Infinit Spaces is a subsidiary of Sify Technologies specifically catering to the co-location demands of hyperscalers, enterprises, and neo-Cloud prospects. Currently, the portfolio hosts 14 data centers across six cities. The project represents a major boost to the State government's digital initiatives and positions Visakhapatnam as a critical node in India's expanding digital infrastructure network.

The combination of AI-powered edge computing capabilities and international cable landing station functionality is expected to create new opportunities across multiple sectors in the region.
