Dr Christoph Müller, CEO of Amprion, and Kevin Dijkers, CEO of GIGA Storage, signed an agreement to connect GIGA Storage's Albatross battery energy storage system to Amprion's 380 kV transmission grid.

A first for both companies

The signing marks a significant milestone for both parties. For Amprion, it is the first grid connection agreement the transmission system operator has concluded for a large-scale battery storage project.

For GIGA Storage, it represents a key step in building out its German portfolio: Albatross is the company's first utility-scale battery project in Germany and reached Ready to Build status earlier this month. With the grid connection now secured, the project moves a step closer to construction and operation.

Project details

Albatross will be built in the Samtgemeinde Neuenkirchen in Lower Saxony, next to Amprion's Merzen substation. The battery will have a capacity of 350 MW and 1,400 MWh, storing electricity when it is available and feeding it back into the grid when it is needed. Commissioning is planned for 2028.

Why it matters

As the share of wind and solar in electricity generation continues to grow, the power system needs greater flexibility to balance changing supply and demand.

By shifting electricity from times of abundance to times when it is needed, large-scale batteries support the integration of renewable generation and help make more efficient use of the existing grid.

Next steps

GIGA Storage thanked both the Amprion team and its own team for making the grid connection agreement happen, stating it is excited about what comes next.

With the agreement in place and Ready to Build status achieved, attention now turns to taking Albatross toward its planned 2028 commissioning.
