Amazon announced plans to invest an estimated USD 15 billion in Northern Indiana to build new data center campuses supporting artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies. This investment, in addition to the USD 11 billion announced last year in St. Joseph County, will expand infrastructure to new sites across Indiana.

The new project will create more than 1,100 new high-skilled jobs while supporting thousands of other jobs in the data center supply chain. New positions will range from data center engineers and network specialists to engineering operations managers, security specialists, and other technical roles. The planned investment is expected to support thousands of local electricians, construction workers, fiber-optic technicians, and other jobs within the local community.

Infrastructure and Energy Capacity

The new project will add 2.4 gigawatts of data center capacity in the region. These facilities are purpose-built for scale and optimized for AI, machine learning, and next-generation cloud applications while maintaining industry-leading standards in energy efficiency and sustainability. The data centers will bring the same advanced infrastructure that powers Project Rainier, described as the world's largest AI supercomputer.

Amazon and NIPSCO have established a framework to power Amazon data centers through NIPSCO's newly created subsidiary, NIPSCO Generation LLC (GenCo). Amazon will pay fees to use existing power lines and cover the costs for any new power plants, power lines, or equipment needed to serve the data center project without additional cost to local residents and businesses.

The total project will add 3 gigawatts of new capacity, which exceeds Amazon's 2.4 gigawatt needs. This additional generation helps enhance grid reliability for all of NIPSCO's customers while adding greater assurance that the grid remains reliable during periods of peak stress, such as hot summer days and cold winter nights.

Economic Impact and Cost Savings

The energy agreement with NIPSCO is expected to provide approximately USD 1 billion in cost savings to current Indiana residents and businesses over 15 years. According to NIPSCO president and chief operating officer Vince Parisi, this agreement structure represents approximately USD 1 billion in cost savings over 15 years for existing NIPSCO electric customers, while strengthening the regional grid and the economic future.

Since 2010, Amazon has invested more than USD 31.3 billion in Indiana, contributing more than USD 29.9 billion to the state's GDP and supporting 24,500 full and part-time jobs, plus 27,500 indirect jobs, across various facilities. The current investment is described as the largest capital investment in the state's history.

Training and Education Programs

Amazon will bring training and education programs to local communities, including data center technician programs, fiber optic fusion splicing workshops, and STEM awareness and learning opportunities for K-12 schools. The company will support Indiana community colleges, technical schools, universities, and workforce development organizations in designing, developing, and expanding training programs and work-based learning opportunities.

This training and support will include donations of facilities and equipment to empower hands-on learning, faculty training from industry subject-matter experts, and curricular content that links programs of study to industry standards and best practices. Amazon Community Workforce Accelerator (CWA) training centers will support careers in cloud computing infrastructure with cutting-edge facilities and a network of training providers, including community colleges, universities, school districts, industry training organizations, and AWS itself.

Data Center Operations and Fiber Optic Technician Programs will bring industry experts and state-of-the-art equipment to local education institutions to train the next generation of Indiana data center operators. Ivy Tech integrated these programs into its curriculum in 2025. Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Workshops will offer two-day certificate courses at local community colleges, technical schools, and universities, training individuals in fusion splicing techniques and equipment, and connecting them to fiber-broadband employers.

Information Infrastructure Workshops for Educators will provide one-day workshops to help education and workforce leaders better understand the physical layer of cloud computing and the information economy.

Official Statements

Indiana Governor Mike Braun called this “a massive win for Hoosier ratepayers,” stating that the agreement will ensure a surplus in new energy development that will deliver real savings to Hoosier ratepayers. He noted that Amazon's investment shows that Indiana's business-friendly climate continues to attract world-class employers and drive state growth.

David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, said Indiana has long been an important partner for Amazon. He stated the company is proud to reaffirm its commitment to long-term investment and growth, underscoring its dedication to fueling AI innovation while generating meaningful economic impact throughout the state.

U.S. Representative Rudy Yakym said the project will create good-paying jobs for Hoosiers, expand the tax base, and strengthen the economic foundation for communities across the state. He noted that it positions Indiana at the forefront of America's next generation of innovation, ensuring the country builds that future domestically while delivering new opportunities for Hoosier families.
