The Albanese Government has approved the Pottinger Wind Farm in the Riverina region of New South Wales, marking the 107th renewable energy project approved under the current administration. The wind farm will generate 1,300 Megawatts of electricity, enough to power around 590,000 homes. The approval was granted under national environment law on October 5, 2025, following what officials described as a rigorous assessment process.

The project comes with strict conditions designed to minimize potential environmental impacts.

Project Location and Specifications

The Pottinger Wind Farm will be located between Hay and Deniliquin in the Riverina region. The facility will feature 247 wind turbines that will feed into a 500 MW battery energy storage system. This storage capability is designed to ensure that the wind farm's clean power remains available for later use. The project has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

According to the government announcement, this reduction is equivalent to removing more than a million cars from the road each year.

Employment and Economic Impact

During the construction phase, the Pottinger Wind Farm is expected to support up to 900 jobs. Once operational, the facility will create an additional 50 permanent positions to support ongoing operations. Minister for the Environment and Water Murray Watt emphasized the project's benefits for regional communities, stating that it will deliver clean, cheap, and reliable power to the Riverina and surrounding areas while improving infrastructure and increasing jobs and investment in the local community.

Infrastructure Improvements

As part of the project development, the proponent will undertake significant infrastructure upgrades. Roads in Hay, Conargo, and Broken Hill will be upgraded and improved to accommodate the transport of project components. These road improvements are expected to directly benefit local communities and businesses that use these transportation routes daily.

The government highlighted that while political debates continue regarding climate change policy, local communities are actively participating in the transition to cleaner energy sources. Since 2022, the Albanese Government has approved over 100 renewable energy projects, collectively capable of powering every home in Australia.
